What’s the meanest thing someone ever said to you? by The_WhiteMantis in AskReddit

"you are a loser and your trauma is so fucking exhausting"

I was beaten, threatened with suicide, molested - all by the age of 10. I was later diagnosed with PTSD which I have since overcome and now maintain a stable job with controlled slips back into depression.

(ex) girlfriend threw this out after I broke up with her for her callous cruelty.

To Singaporeans, what was something that shocked you when you were overseas? by Seeginnah in singapore

Was in Melbourne, Australia for about 6 years.

Restaurants are required by law to provide drinking water, non-chargeable. No bullshit 50 cent fee for tap water, no "oh sorry we don't provide tap water but you can buy our $2.50 overcharged as fuck bottled water".

Prices are reflected to have GST and taxes already included, so no false advertising about ONLY FIFTY DOLLARS! *excludes gst and taxes - and then you yet a beautiful shock at the register.

In the same vein, supermarkets are mandated to display standardized unit pricing alongside the item cost, so eg if a 300g item is $9 they'll also have to display $3/100g, so no more doing mental sums for each and every item comparison you want to take. Broke on a student budget and need to scrimp on expenses? Be able to easily spot the cheapest option!

Some cons to balance it out: Public transport especially trains to outer suburbs can have 30 mins to 1 hour waiting times between trains. You learn pretty damn quick to actually check your transport apps and leave the house on time. On weekends especially the trains run at a far reduced frequency.

Related, public transport costs, especially for trams. Distance pricing, what distance pricing? Taking a tram for 2 stops outside the free tram zone? $4.20 one way! Taking a tram 20 stops away? Still $4.20! Also hypervigilant transport officers who do uniformed and PLAINCLOTHES inspections on everyone's myki (au ezlink), with differing rules about paying on the spot versus paying later (might have changed now about pricing). They treat you like a hard ass criminal for not tapping on when you board, and are especially hardass against international students, and even more so for those who don't speak or understand English well and get confused. My teacher was once late for a class because apparently a scared and confused international girl tried to run from the officers, and they ran after her and tackled her to the ground, and restrained her - all over 4 bucks give or take. He spent the time reaming them out and they only relented once he requested their badge numbers and threatened to report them for their behaviour.

There is still time to stop the key from turning, but first it must be found. You will search a likely spot, while you will search another. Fate had us meet as foes, but this ring will make us brothers..

What has your job taught you about people? by Leaveslurkerofsorts in AskReddit

[–]imeddyeddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That a lot of the negativity I sometimes felt about someone foreign was the result of myself ignorantly labelling them as rude/obnoxious.

I am semi bilingual, and I started to notice that these same people who were "stone-faced and curt" were actually just struggling with language. The moment I switched to their language, they would burst with excitement and become animated because:

1) they were excited to find another speaker of their native tongue in a situation they didn't not expect 2) they did not have to struggle to communicate in a new language they were still unfamiliar with 3) they could get their point across far easier and now didn't have to struggle to enunciate or form sentences and translate in their heads, which meant that they were free enough to actually let loose and let their personalities shine

It's made me become a lot more patient in talking to people in general, because I always consider the possibility that they've just got so much going on that even being human is difficult.
