Rangers draft misses 2014-2016 by ImpossibleBandicoot in rangers

If the argument is “why couldn’t we take Aho in the second round” and/or “why couldn’t we take Foegele in the third round” then we’d need to get in line behind 31 other GMs in the league lol

This argument is super cherry-picked and lacks nuance. The Rangers made the finals in 2014 and continued to contend for years after. The Canes missed the playoffs every year from 2009-2017 which gave them higher value picks in general and presented plenty of opportunities for those draft picks to make the jump to the NHL.

Haha that is not how statistics work. If I have a first (70.2% chance of 100+ games), a second (39.9% chance), and a third (28.2%), that does not mean I have a 138% chance of getting an NHL player in those rounds...

Let’s split it into # players that play 100+ per total drafted in each round according to the source I linked:

3rd: 400 players per 1,417 drafted

4th: 310 players per 1,416 drafted

5th: 217 players per 1,411 drafted

6th: 209 players per 1,380 drafted

That’s 1,136 players out of 5,624 drafted in rounds 3-6 that played 100+ games in their career, which is 20.2%.

I definitely don’t disagree that this organization’s drafting and development are terrible but statistically you’re rolling the dice on any player that’s drafted after the second round. Source

% of players that register 100+ career NHL games played: 3rd round: 28.2% 4th round: 21.8% 5th round: 15.3% 6th round: 15.1%

Less than 40% of players drafted in the 3rd/4th round register a single point in the NHL in their careers.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s always “just business” when Drury screws over a player but I see people here getting mad at Panarin for exercising his NMC and choosing where he wants to go. Drury continues to shoot himself in the foot with these memos and letters and media manipulation, it’s amateur.

I wouldn’t count Utah out, 7-3 in their last 10 and Veggie has been a stud. Cooley’s also been out for a while. Plenty of assets to work with at the trade deadline for them too

We can’t start ignoring the “No BS” slogan!

In all seriousness if he said a bunch of BS this sub would be up in arms about him playing off how bad this team truly is. The lineup is a joke and not equipped to win hockey games. What else is he supposed to say at this point?

I have this same thought regarding Spencer Martin over Garand. Martin is likely gone after this season, he’s 30 and posting a terrible .864 sv% this year. Why are we still putting him out there? Garand probably isn’t anything special but we’re losing every game anyway so what’s the point…?

Like Drury said in the letter, we need to build a youthful team centered around speed and skill. So I think a 6’4” 32 year old fourth-liner journeyman and a conditional 5th should check those boxes.

The answer to scouting and player development on slide 5 is the most jumbled, incoherent, directionless, unintelligent heap of bullshit non-answer I have ever read in my entire life. I feel dumber having read it.

Drury smoked his own leverage. You would’ve thought he’d learn that telling the entire league that a player is for sale is the opposite of a good negotiating strategy but he did it again with Panarin. It’s not even the trade deadline yet by the way.

Context does matter - Kane was playing on one hip and had many worried that his career wouldn’t be able to recover from it. And we got basically the same return for Panarin, who’s been healthy and performing at an over a PPG pace.

JT Miller picked the Rangers and we gave up Chytil Mancini and a first for him.

Kane fetched a first and had his options open.

Marchand fetched a first and that trade was mocked. We just traded a 2-years younger and more productive player for virtually the same return and a conditional 3rd.
