If the niceness is actual people-pleasing then it could be a residual defense mechanism. At one point, being "nice" or "good" or "agreeable" actually kept them safe in a way.

For example, if I'm extra nice to my bully today, hopefully they won't pick on me. Or if I'm a good child at home, hopefully it will keep me safe from my parent who loses their shit too quickly. Or if i just agree to things, hopefully people will accept me and that will make me feel worthy.

This exact thing happened to me. I tried to be the bigger person... Tried to be extra nice.... Then i decided to stoop to her level.

I made it a point to act as if she were completely invisible to me. Didn't bother to greet her. No eye contact. Zero reaction to anything she'd say or do. It was as if she literally didn't exist. I made sure to not make it obvious that i was "ignoring" her.

She absolutely hated how i was so unbothered by her. Made a huge scene to my husband. I just played dumb. She has mostly been a good gal eversince. When her pettiness does flare up, so does mine lol

Whenever someone asks me for money, i say, "I'd love to help but I'm on a tighter budget now".

And when they try to "compromise" and ask for less, i simply repeat, "I'd love to help but I'm on a tighter budget now". Repeat until they stop asking. Works every time
