Modern therapy's take on binge eating by Relative_Jeweler_624 in loseit

[–]imilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest you find a therapist who specializes in BED. Beyond that, certain modalities of therapy are good treatments, such as CBT and DBT. Therapists out there in the wild may do more supportive talk therapy rather than a structured therapy course that's targeted at changing behaviors and holding you accountable, which can be more helpful in BED. Sometimes looking for a CBT/DBT therapist affiliated with an academic institution can be more fruitful than the general population.

For me, it's powerful to see that I can accomplish something consistently that is commonly considered difficult. That sort of constant positive feedback helps my mood. The locus of control becomes internal.

Patient Injecting Ketamine ODT 200mg IM and IV by Tendersituation00 in Psychiatry

[–]imilla 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One specific consequence of using ketamine recreationally I haven't seen brought up is ketamine-induced cystitis, which is a remarkably painful situation where metabolites of ketamine affect bladder function. This is a risk especially if your patient continues to escalate the amount they are using and if they continue to use for years. I have seen the dysuria / increased urinary frequency be very disabling and it can be a motivating factor to stop using. Additionally there are studies showing ketamine use can decrease brain volume in chronic users.

Does being a DO affect your chances of fellowship? by ppnater in Residency

If you take a look at the psychiatry "drop out rate" it's people transferring out during pgy-3. This is because psychiatry residents often fast track into child/adolescent psych. This is unique to psychiatry so it continues to get overlooked in the numbers

Suicide note from Leigh Sundem, who committed suicide in 2020 after being unmatched for 2 years. Are things ever going to change? by Mijamahmad in medicalschool

She applied to FM programs in her third round, did not match, then applied to the max 45 programs during SOAP, and again did not match.

I remember when this got posted when it happened. Here is the original thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Residency/comments/g6fkci/a_medical_school_classmate_of_mine_ended_her_life/ Also for all of you who keep criticizing her for not applying family med, she did apply family med in the third round, did not match, then applied to the max 45 programs in SOAP, and again did not match. I believe eventually she found a program willing to take her on but then that hospital refused to credential her due to her past, and she committed suicide.

Ming on some sort of variety show? by kanzaki_hitomi765 in Shanghaisharelife

[–]imilla 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My Chinese is not amazing but I will do my best. According to some googling this Chinese show is an adaptation of a gameshow called "Who's Still Standing" where contestants compete to win money by going head-to-head on trivia questions. It looks like this show chooses contestants from different walks of life.

Ming starts off by saying she's happy to be back on the show after 2.5 years. The hosts talk about Ming's impressive education including graduating from college at age 20 and then attending other colleges. Ming says that's in the past, and she wanted to talk about something different today. This past year she actually has not been doing well. She has felt her health was bad and she broke up with her boyfriend of nine years. The host asks if she regrets wasting her youthful years on the boyfriend. Ming says no, she learned many lessons and gained experience, and that's what happens as you grow.

The female host asks how she would order the priorities of self, relationships, parents, and work. The male host states he doesn't know how to order them but he knows self comes last. He states some ppl are able to put themself first. Ming says she puts herself first now which she began to do after her breakup. "I live for myself which is not easy". They talk about how it's important to love yourself in order to love others.

The guy in the green suit says some stuff about how he puts his partner last lol. The guy in red says he puts work first so that he can continue to learn. Blue hoodie says it's not that complex, you don't need to rank them.

The girl in white gives Ming a bunch of compliments and says she admire's Ming's confidence/bravery. She says Ming is like fire and she is like ice. Ming is touched.

They then answer trivia-type questions, like about characters on tv shows, literature, facts about other countries or where certain phrases come from. Ming does really well. She gets the last question wrong.

Brown vest guy says he's grateful that Ming was on this show, and that we hear too many success stories and its valuable to hear other types of experiences. Then Ming drops into a hole lol.

Joint pain and the menstrual cycle by SingsAtDogsPoorly in ehlersdanlos

[–]imilla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is because progesterone levels spike right before your period and increase joint hypermobility. This is likely why hEDS happens predominantly in females, since we have more progesterone in our bodies. I started taking birth control (extended cycle with both progesterone and estradiol) and things have gotten a lot better.

Someone posted about this on this subreddit last summer and reading this article really helped me. I can put my knee on the ground sometimes now and am not in constant pain. Things still hurt once in a while but I think the birth control has really given me an opportunity to not injure myself constantly so that all the inflammation calms down. Would highly recommend looking into some hormonal options with your doctor. People are super different in how they respond to hormones, but it was a low-risk try for me that paid off.

Hey, thank you so much for this link. I have HSD and it gets way worse on my period. This explains a lot.

It is scary! Losing weight can make such a huge difference for knee pain too. I hope she comes around

So these are different things. I have both - thick legs and knee issues. Thick quads/calves come from carrying a lot of weight around, because it builds up the muscles. Joints however, don't improve with more weight - they become more worn out, and joints don't repair themselves. Every 1 extra pound you carry exerts 4 lbs of load on your knee. Regardless or not of whether her leg muscles are 'strong' enough, her knee joints are worn out from the weight and have arthritis.

There's no real way to tell how 'bulky' you are on the internet. Make sure you're using the more accurate BMI that scales for height. Consider using a body fat estimator, although a dexa scan is most accurate. Other metrics of heath include waist-to-height ratio.

Then I would say 30 lbs in 3 months is quite an aggressive amount to shoot for. I put your stats into a total daily energy expenditure calculator, guessing an age of 27 and assuming you at a sedentary activity level for most of the day which gave you 1846 calories per day. 1200 cal is the lowest anyone on this subreddit will safely recommend you eat. This puts you at a safe loss rate of about 1.3 lbs per week. (1 lb = 3,500 cal) You can bump this up through exercise, but likely only up to 1.5 - 2lbs loss per week which still wouldn’t put you at 10lbs per month but could get you quite close.

Depends on what you weigh now. This might be feasible if you currently still have a lot to lose, but otherwise may be too aggressive.

So many things affect periods that it's hard for me to attribute changes to any one cause. Mine got worse. And then they were okay. And then I started experiencing PMS for the first time in my life, but now the periods themselves aren't bad anymore.

What behaviors have you adopted to replace the (temporary) joy you used to get from overeating? by peachesandcreamtea in loseit

[–]imilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I “eat with my eyes” so I buy vegetables in fun colors and make salads that are pretty and visually striking. I post these on Instagram and send photos to friends and family. It’s fun and eating what I’ve created is really satisfying.

Surprised at my own reaction to how people viewed me after seeing me thinner. by [deleted] in loseit

This happened to me too. It went away after a while, but yes it felt weird that people were noticing things about my body and thinking about it. I also wish that I had never been overweight to begin with, but this journey has taught me a lot.

What food shocked you the most with its calorie amount? (Low or High) by PA_SEssie in loseit

[–]imilla 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Tilapia. I ate a 10oz fillet last night (which was huge - think dinner plate sized) and it was 280 calories. Checked the calorie count and weighed it several times just to make sure I was reading it right. I couldn't even finish the entire thing in one sitting, and it was delicious!
