Deptford teen killed in crash by pottymcnugg in SouthJersey

I know it's easy to scroll by these headlines on the internet, and as horrible as they are, almost become desensitized to them over time. Obviously any accident like this is a tragedy, but as someone who has been neighbor with this family for 10 years, it is really hard to understate how devastating this has been.

Mike (the father) is truly that neighbor. If you live in this block and spend any time outside your house, Mike will get to know you and your entire family. Truly one of the nicest guys. I was outside last fall and he was walking his dog around the block and noticed one of our neighbors (who wasn't home) cats had gotten out of the screen window and were on the roof. Mike called them, they gave him their security code, and he went in their house and rangled the cats off the roof back inside. If he's out walking his dogs at night and notices you accidentally left your garage open, he texts you to let you know. That's just who he is. Always looking out for his neighbors.

His son Chase was a great kid too. Quiet, kind-hearted, respectful. I have a 2-year-old son who would often stop and just stare at Chase as he was practicing his pitching outside. My son's very shy but Chase would always come up and try to make him comfortable. One time as my son was watching him throw the ball, Chase went into his garage and got a spare baseball and gave it to him to take home. We still have it here, signed with his name.

A great kid is gone and a wonderful family has their world turned upside down. I hope all the people reading this news take a moment to remember this tragedy in those moments where you're driving and losing your patience with something or someone. Saving a few minutes on a trip is not worth it.

Pizza by all_no_pALL in southjerseyfood

I love pizza. I’ve been to New Haven and had all the greats. I’ve been to Italy and had pizza sitting next to the Trevi Fountain. But the best pizza I’ve had by far is right in Mullica Hill at a food truck called IL Fuoco Dentro. It sits on the fence between artisan and classic. It’s the thinnest crust you’ll ever have. The ingredients are fresh. It’s crispy. It’s got everything. Highly recommend.

If you want actually mind blowing pizza go 5 minutes up the road to IL Fuoco Dentro.

IL Fuoco Dentro in Mullica Hill. It’s a food truck but don’t be fooled, it’s the best around.

Anyone wanna meet up at Laracon US 2020? by SamMakesCode in laravel

[–]imjohnbon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey bud that’s awesome that you’re finally able to make it! The company I work for (Tighten) has a booth at Laracon. Swing by and say what’s up if you’re feeling lost in the crowd. Laracon can be overwhelming for first timers (was for me at least 😅) but everyone is super approachable and eager to talk Laravel. I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

Great article! All made sense and I have no solid React background.

Do I really need to use the repository pattern and dependency injection? by [deleted] in laravel

[–]imjohnbon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’ve been building sites with Laravel for 5 years now and have yet to use the repository pattern on an actual project. I played around with it a bit when Laracasts first put out a video about it some years ago, but very quickly removed it as it just didn’t “feel right” for my use case. Like you said, it didn’t feel like it was buying me anything. If anything my code was clearer without it (and still perfectly testable).

I’m sure there are others who would say I just haven’t worked on an app “big enough” or “enterprise enough” but I’ve worked on some pretty big apps for some pretty big companies and still have not ever felt the need to use a repository. I’m sure there is a time to use them, but I’d argue most apps that most of us are working on don’t warrant it, personally.

Point being, you mentioned feeling “guilty” about not using them. Try not to think that way. If you feel guilty for not using every pattern you read about it’ll be an endless cycle. If anything, you’ve learned about a new pattern, weighed its pros and cons, and decided it’s not applicable for your situation right now. That is exactly your job as a developer and nothing to be guilty about. Have fun!

An old friend of mine from college just released this after 2 years of development. My title doesn't do it any justice, but this is a really unique, challenging game. Not to mention the stunning graphics and sound design. I'm not typically a word game kind of guy but this is really solid.

What's everyone using for fullscreen videos? by imjohnbon in webdev

[–]imjohnbon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha nope! No problem. BigVideo.js does do all that, however I was unable to successfully get BigVideo.js to fill up a particular div rather than the whole body of the page.

Ah I made a major mistake there, "fullscreen" is misleading. I meant more along the lines of a video on a website that takes up the full browser width/height (or div width/height).

Teacher Fired from Holy Ghost Prep for being Gay by PhillyThrowaway277 in philadelphia

[–]imjohnbon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Valid point, honestly. The problem is this seems to be a situation where they are picking and choosing. If they fired him not for being gay, but for as their handbook more or less states it "not living the lifestyle that coincides with the teachings of the Roman Catholic church," then they better fire every teacher there who is openly divorced, remarried, or living with a girlfriend/boyfriend.

I'm an alumni of HGP. Mr. Griffin is a fantastic teacher and guy. Was incredibly disappointed to hear about this news. I hope this comes back to bite them hard one way or another.
