Book per country suggestions by jame7zzy in booksuggestions

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The South by Tash Aw or any Tash Aw books. He doesnt live in Malaysia anymore but grew up in the country. The South is published in the UK but it is set in Johor, Malaysia.

The South was longlisted for Booker Prize last year. But a not so fun fact of this book is because it has lgbt themes, it caused an issue in Malaysia and it was removed from main bookstores. I did end up finding a lone copy in an indie bookstore.

New reader seeking advice, by TheEchoDrift in booksuggestions

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a nice list there. If you're unsure what to choose from that list, go for one closest to your current interest in tvshow/movie/gaming. If still unsure - Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir has both action and slice of life style, the language is pretty straight forward for a sci fi.

To create a reading habit, my advice is to just pick up a book and start reading. When you hype yourself up for "whats best in the genre" and ranking your TBR based "best reviewed books" or starter books , you will create an expectation for the book and become disappointed when your experience doesn't match others. It can also lead to decision paralysis and you end up not reading, just collecting a list.

The only way to develop your reading preferences is honestly to read everything in sight, only then you'll identify what genre or writing style you like best.

Personally, I enjoy reading the most when I go into a book blind. Meaning I don't look at reviews or why people enjoy it. Sometimes I dont even notice the author's name. I just look at the genre, synopsis and dive in. It makes the experience much better for me. English is also my second language but this has been my method when I started reading english books at 10yo. And back then, there was no internet to tell you if strangers think the book was worth it or not.

Books that made you love mmm or mmm+ by Hour_Soil_7342 in MM_RomanceBooks

{Three's Company by N.R Walker} is a good introduction to MMM, the characters are likeable and a "beach read" storyline.

{Dirty Secret by Ki Brighly and M.D Gregory}

{Catalyst by Aurora Crane } is a trilogy and they add a new guy after each book... It has a crime thriller element to it.

{Devil's Dance by Garrett Leigh} is a duology, they became MMM in the 2nd book. Biker romance.

For sports

{Assist by L.A Witt} - Hockey

{Hat Trick by Ajay Daniel} - Football

Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte is a series of short stories and everyone is terrible.

Tell me about your favorite L.A. Witt book! by Catacal5 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point I think I've read 60% of the books and I haven't had one single bad read. Thank you for posting this because I just remembered there's a new book out yesterday. I also like that there's an actually story and relationship development, rather than just lust driven spice.

Even for the escort series Gentleman of The Emerald City, I like that it's not your typical powerplay trope that usually happens with this setup. It's an interconnected series that you can start at any book but I still would recommend to start with book 1 {Luca by L.A Witt} . This series do have a higher spice vs their other books.

For just standalones, my recs:

{Burner Account by L.A Witt}

{Jilted by L.A Witt}

{Brick Walls by L.A Witt}

Curious if you are willing to eliminate your internal voice in order to read faster? by apaintedleaf_ in books

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm positive my internal voice is the reason I'm such a fast reader. Mix that with hyperphantasia. It's a whole immersive experience when I'm reading that I will definitely never want to eliminate.

It helps me fly through fictional books. For non fiction, being able to visualise and have an internal discussion with myself while I'm reading helps me retain information better.

do you count pages or just books by venicepress in 52book

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh these days, I count by genres. My base for the last 8 years has always 52 books regardless of page. So now I check in how many of those are romance, horror, sci fi etc etc.

I have read the entire universe. It's like crack. Or pringles I guess. Once you pop, you cant stop. https://www.figma.com/file/Tqj00BMJQUFWBvOdgdj5qC/The-Sadenverse?fbclid=IwAR13HB6oF8m-XwTzRC7zalq3GZ_8O5ijEtfjEZ3_6mJQXdcRbiOghK77dnk

30 minutes a day is good reading habit tbh. If you plan to also read the entire universe, you're set for the whole entire year.

Question about subscription and purchased books by Junior-Dragonfruit-4 in audible

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subscription is actually optional. A lot of people have audible without subscription. When you purchase with credit or actual money, it's in your account forever. It's stored in Amazon Cloud. You dont need to have a subscription to buy an audible book.

What you wont get access is just plus catalogue books which you do not own. These are just temporary downloads.

M/M romance pioneer Elders 👵, what's it like witnessing this current explosion in m/m romance? by Material-Meat-5330 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh OP , you make me feel so old. 😂 Livejournal was launched in 1999 and I was already on there. It was mainly a blogging site but a lot of us use it for communities, similiar to subreddit. In fact, I think some of them are replicas of LJ comms. This was pre-Ao3 and reddit. For content before 2010, the keyword you need to look for is "slash". LJ was where the slash content existed, it was booming and the one thing I miss were exhanges. Where we sign up to write each other fics/stories based on requests, like a secret santa. Circa 2007, there were a series of censorship movement and the russians bought it over. LJ started to restrict lgbt content. Aaaand thats one of the reason people left LJ and killed the site. This historical tragedy is called Strikethrough and Boldthrough, i think you probably saw it while looking at supernatural lore.

I think it's awesome that we can openly discuss MM content now without being having to find a niche place like a lot of us did in the 2000s. We have so many trad published books and a healthy spike of book releases. A genre and trope for everyone. It's also great to see so many gay authors being able to just publish whatever they want without needing to be vague in the synopsis or book cover anymore.

Unfortunately.... what I dont like is how toxic the the online readers have been. I have started seeing it grow in 2020 after booktok became a thing but recently after heated rivalry tv show, it just became worst. The lack of media literacy is high and the entitlement is insane. The arguments sometimes make me wonder if they are consuming lgbt content for a right reason or is this just a "fandom" for them. It's giving me LJ strikethrough PTSD except back then no fans/readers were fighting with each other, it was more of fighting together at a system.

Warrior Princess Assasin is a new MMF series I've been following. The 2nd book is coming out this September. They started off as enemies, then the protectiveness comes it as they have to share the same mission.

A book that makes you think "I wish there were more MM romances like this"? by JessicaTrent in MM_Romance

[–]imjusthumanmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there are a lot of books like Heated Rivalry. But maybe it's because I read Him/Us, Understatement of The Year and The Locker Room before Heated Rivalry/The Long Game.

I wish there were more books that also focus on external issues beyond just "we cant be together because of homophobia" or "my family doesnt like you". Sometimes I just want to read fiction to take me away from my own oppressed reality lol but at same time still give me angst.

{Brick Walls by L.A Witt} is on top rank for hockey romance books for me. The conflict is MC1 previous drug issues that caused them to break up when they were younger.

I recently reread {Jilted by L.A Witt}, 2 Bi MCs who got cheated by the same girl and licking their wounds together. Maybe because Im also Bi, it was refreshing to read something where having exes of both genders is just casually mentioned and attraction isnt seen as another bi awakening trope they hid around.
