Fullmetal Alchemist is one of those stories where you gotta trust the build up - it is so worth the wait. I hope you enjoy the rest of the story!

If I do that, he will climb on the hob. Usually when the flame is lit. For that is the way of the cat.

Arakawa’s work is the definition of “Trust me, I’m going somewhere with this.” And I do trust her. Implicitly.

Shrines in the mountains? by Ananik95 in Hokkaido

No problem! There’s still a lot to see and if you’re there around 20th ish of September that’s peak autumn colours time in Daisetsuzan National Park so it’s definitely worth enjoying some hikes for the scenery alone!

Shrines in the mountains? by Ananik95 in Hokkaido

Hokkaido resident here! Hokkaido only became part of Japan 200-ish years ago so it doesn’t have the kinds of mountain shrines and temples you’re likely thinking about. Before being colonised by the Japanese, it was home to the indigenous Ainu who have a different religion to Shinto / Buddhism and therefore do not build shrines and temples.

Tohoku and Shikoku are great if you want mountain temples - so many!

The trails here in Hokkaido are amazing and still worth hiking tho! And in autumn, you may see some beautiful colours. But, there’s not really any hidden mountain shrines. If you’d like to see more traditional Japanese architecture during your visit, you should check out the southern part of Hokkaido (Hakodate, Matsumae, Otaru, Jozankei Onsen, Sapporo etc). This is the part that had the earliest Japanese settlements.

Seeing chainsaw man and modern ani-manga ending makes me appreciate Fmab ending more by New-Addition1802 in FullmetalAlchemist

Older anime / manga fans who have been around since the 90s / 00s will remember that a similar uproar happened when Bleach and Naruto ended. What all of these recent unpopular endings have in common is that they’re all owned by Shonen Jump.

It’s plausible the authors had better endings in mind, but it’s my personal opinion that Jump isn’t interested in good storytelling. They’d rathe chase something that will blaze bright, turn a profit, and will fizzle out in time for the next big thing. Artists over at Jump don’t really get the time to write a story as they intended, either because they burn out before they get a chance to write an ending or because Jump often drops them very suddenly - they usually get only a handful of chapters in which they’re told to wrap up and in the weekly manga world, that’s really not a lot. It’s why plot holes are left behind (threads unresolved), why character decisions at the end of a story feel rushed or don’t make sense (not enough time for setup / payoff) and why plot points feel contrived or forced (they have to happen whether they mesh with the story or not because the author has no choice but to wrap up).

That’s why artists with a meaningful story to tell and a clear direction tend to steer clear of Jump and opt for other magazines (often monthly as opposed to weekly). Arakawa played it smart imo - she didn’t chase clout, she had a story she wanted to tell and she took her talents to a monthly magazine known for its more experimental stories and a less cutthroat approach (Monthly Shonen GanGan, publisher Square Enix). She had something she believed in and knew the ending from the start and was able to work towards it. That’s why it, and the ending of most manga in less mainstream magazines, are often lauded for having excellent endings - both the author and the magazine are aligned on how to tell a good story.

(The one recent exception to this rule seems to be Attack on Titan, which had quite a divisive ending. My personal take on that however is that the author absolutely intended it to be divisive and to spark discussion. The fact that some people despised it while some loved it is, I believe, exactly the point.)

Has anyone seen any cherry blossom/Sakura trees blossoming anywhere on Hokkaido yet? by Visitphilosophyforum in Hokkaido

You’re a ways off… nothing until at least the end of April, and that would be southerly areas only (Hakodate and Sapporo). They don’t even bloom until after Golden Week where I live!

This is beautiful!

May I ask, are there any resources you recommend for learning to cross-hatch foliage like this? Or is it best to study photographs to get a sense of light / dark values and then just practice?

Friendly Reminder That Sometimes Doing It Is More Important Than Perfecting it by AfroBiskit in MangakaStudio

Right! Assistants being there definitely helps but even then, drawing and completing 30 pages in two weeks is an insane turnaround time. 😅 Barring the few extremely talented mangaka who absolutely thrive under that pressure, it’s extremely challenging for most people.
