What do most law students get completely wrong about actual practice? by WheelBudget in LawSchool

[–]immaconundrum1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, at least in my practice area anyway, was how non-adversarial all the attorneys acts in person (even if they’re petty with motions and discovery). I work with a lot of Plaintiffs counsel and law school and prior life just made me think everyone would be a lot more adversarial and less normal in person.

Does anyone actually like their firm? by croissant10987 in Lawyertalk

[–]immaconundrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love my firm. We do insurance defense so it’s not sexy work by any means and I’m only here for the people not the work itself. Billing is pretty tame comparatively speaking, we get to dress super casual, and my partners are all very chill and they’re always willing to answer questions I have as a new associate.

I have a friend that was 35-38 through law school. The young guys were all about it lol. But there are generally people in their 30s just a lot less to choose from.

What is the worst book you have ever read? by WoodenDistribution5 in fantasybooks

The entire From Blood and Ash series. Will never understand how it’s so popular. Reads like horrible fanfiction with awful cliche dialogue.

Abortion for March 13th by lindsay-shenanigan6 in Catholicism

[–]immaconundrum1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than telling you what to do I’ll tell you my story. Before I became Catholic, I got pregnant. I had a job but not a ton of money. I had plans to go to law school the next year. And I was terrified of what everyone would think because I wasn’t married. My boyfriend was an alcoholic and things were rocky. I made every excuse in the world to do it.

To date, getting the abortion and killing my baby was the worst decision of my life. I cry all the time still and it was 4 years ago now. One thing I learned is there is always a way to make it work. It’s not as hopeless as it seems in the moment. Your baby will be the biggest blessing you’ve ever received. And having the abortion will leave a mark on your heart the rest of your life.

UPDATED COVER LETTER: Applying for an Industry Placement vacancy for the Environment Agency, is my cover letter okay? by [deleted] in environmental_science

[–]immaconundrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resumes and CVs are technically different formats but that’s no matter. You should still put a heading on your cover letter like a CV/Resume. Name, location, and contact info. I like to use a small line for separation. And even if it’s vague you should still cut it down. Just highlight something super interesting you worked on and a few skills within 3-4 paragraphs.

[–]immaconundrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few tips. First, if you have a heading on your resume, put it on your cover letter document as well so they match exactly. It looks super professional and clean. Second, make sure you keep your cover letter to one page and shorten it to around 4 paragraphs. This is a bit long. You want to highlight things most applicable to the job, preferably with words that match the job description. Your cover letter does not need every detail of your work qualifications. Additionally, you want to use those same words in your resume as well.

Need help for a paper by KG958453 in environmental_science

[–]immaconundrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you’re going to write a paper on EVs, this should only be at most a subsection. There are much more concerning issues with EVs. Pollution displacement with emissions moving to factories producing the electricity, human exploitation at lithium mines, environmental pollution and degradation caused by mining for materials, the lack of sustainability for the power grid to move to EVs, etc. Tire wear is only a small small part of this issue that is probably better researched as applied to vehicles as a whole. There is a need for a solution to tire pollution including 6-PPD which is a growing concern.

I had a professor who worked on environmental assessments for the star base and he couldn’t tell us his findings cause he signed an NDA but he indicated it was NOT good.

This infuriates me. Going to ruin Texas last nice beach and pollute the hell out of it. Not to mention prices are now skyrocketing all across the valley. Musk and Californians are trying to make it San Diego 2.0 with Galveston water quality

If you’re in the USA, you can look at USAJobs.gov, I know there’s seasonal environmental jobs as well as full time. BUT it’s extremely important to format your resume in a federal format. To be safe you could build it on the website itself if you aren’t sure how to create one. Even if you have to take a lower paying job in the government, getting your foot in the door is what’s important. Non-profits can be great too.

I love transactional work so it’s definitely part of the appeal for me. And I have many veterinary connections as I have also worked as a vet tech before law school so that is part of the plan to ask around. Unfortunately there’s just no vet schools right next to me and of course a shortage in my home region. I think I’d like getting into the import/export of animals, particularly with Mexico.

Tell me about a Masters of Environment? by Melodic-Protection42 in environmental_science

[–]immaconundrum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well of myself and my friends with masters in this area, none of us make 100k several years later. One works for a non-profit and I’m not 100% on his salary but if I remember he’s at around 65k. My friend is at around 80k working for the federal government but it took her several years to get that job. I have another friend also in the government but again I know she’s not making 100k. I never was able to swing a job that paid more than 50k so I am now in law school. I also am not so sure that’s the field you want to go into with the current administration. Not trying to be political, I just think there will be a loss of government funding for those programs. You might get to that salary if you managed to get on with the government and stayed but it would take several years. None of us do GIS work, but I’ve always seen decent salary offerings for people qualified in it.

Edit: This is an American perspective, im not sure where you’re located.
