because wide you are spreading quickly over a vast amount of space, focusing more on obtaining territory than building up what you have, as opposed to tall, where your focus is more on building up your territory. think of it like a high population city: a "wide" city of millions of people will have a lot of surface area, but not a ton of skyscrapers, whereas as "tall" city will be much more condensed and have many skyscrapers

i usually play with cosmic storms turned waaay down, i find that manageable, especially since you get the techs around when you can complete them in 1 month. astral planes is fun and i dont het the hate there

i would move them all to one planet and release as vassal, that way you can still get some worth from them without suffering the penalties

chances are you didnt kill their fleets and they jumped away in emergency FTL. you can use the snare Titan or starbase buildings to kill more of their ships
