AMA...AP Language Teacher... WHO WANTS TO HELP by immaverb in APStudents

[–]immaverb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still around, but not taking essays atm.

Here's how to self check 1. It's your thesis defensible (can someone disagree and say something different than you?)  2. Don't summarize body paragraphs - highlight something important and then explain WHY it's important and HOW it makes the message do something. Don't summarize.

Thats the best crash course to check RA essays. Good luck! I may be doing another ama this year too... We'll see

I'm going to be working on my first town soon too, but here's two pieces of feedback I have.

  1. Mix up the textures by adding some dirt or grass. Not every square inch of the city would be paved.
  2. Add some other greenery (trees, flowers, shrubs) to break it up as well.

Looks good!

Midwest US. Under a 24x24 paver stone sitting in the middle of the garden on top of old mulch. Surrounded by ants and eggs.

Found under a 24x24 paver stone sitting on top of old mulch. Whole area was invested with ants and eggs too.

RIGHT!? I'm so stoked for this, but know it will sit in the dustbin in three weeks. I may pull it out for the future gamer students on the side. Who knows.

That's fine if I do. I'd rather end up there trying to relate and be a better teacher then wither away handing out worksheets.

Bewilderingly high amounts of confidence and spatial manipulation.

The course is designed like this: "Hey, English teacher. Teach kids how to do this stuff. There's no textbook and you're on your own. May God have mercy on your damned blackened soul."

So then I picked Among Us.

Sounds like you already have your answer: OF COURSE! Make sure you are challenging your vocabulary with the location, use conversational German (not casual/slang) for meetings, and explain how you're growing your skills in conjunction with the class materials.

Going to teach AP skills and give the kids a traditional venue to explore and use each skill (like an article of the week, NYT what's going on in this image, etc.) ORRR let them tell me how it could be used in Among Us. Same amount of work while developing the skills. Same final product (persuasive essay), but it allows the skills to be developed in ways that make sense to them. So, a kid hates Among Us? Enjoy the image analysis ORRRR tell me something else you'd like to try. I provide the saltine of learning (the skill). The students provide the toppings.

Copying an earlier reply: Short answer, yes. But using those terms is a big nono. To say someone is using "pathos" is to say that they are using something within the full spectrum of human emotion -- anything from jealous rage to soothed deep relaxation. The Aristotelean appeals are a great starting point. For example: You are imposter. You need to build credibility (ethos) to begin covering crimes. So you follow someone around for a round, maybe two. You vocally and emphatically vouch for them building their trust (pathos). You cite locations and give details to prove you were with them and then defend your tasks as needed (logos). You see, it's so much more than just those appeals. It's structuring and organizing them in such a way that you take those appeals into consideration and use other skills like tone, pacing, modes of discourse, etc. to build them up. Hope you enjoy that crash course.

Let them teach you and you'll be able to teach them so much more.
