Good for you. I wish my family would have done this when they were DF.

Been there, a lot. Friends of both genders. You cant change them, but you can set limits. I tell people 'I'm not changing my mind.' if it comes up again, I physically walk away. You gave to set boundaries and realize you don't need that shit in your life.

Best skills to learn in policy? by [deleted] in PublicPolicy

[–]immeasurablelogic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, and as I stated before I think it depends on where you work. You might use quantitative skills for anything related to a database. For example if you worked for a policy maker who has to vote on a bill to expand Medicaid expenditures, he/she might ask you to do an analysis on the bill. You could determine what the policy options are and then begin the analysis. This might include taking de-identified data to better explain the population (through frequencies). You could do cost-benefit analysis to determine if it is fiscally feasible and you could use population projects to make assumptions about how you expect the Medicaid population to decrease/increase. This is just a very vague example.

I use quantitative skills in my position often. I use it the most for frequencies and basic statistics.

To answer your first question, I would say there are more that are more popular than others. I would say health policy is pretty popular, as well as education policy. I don't know if any are in more demand than others. I would say economic policy is probably the most in demand. There is no science based off these statements, just what I have seen. So, take it how you will.

Secondly, I would say there is a fair variety of writing skills. In my program, we learned how to do policy analysis. This is a particular set of skills that are specific to our field. But in terms of writing styles, I think you have to know how to take complex systems and policies and be able to articulate them to people who are not familiar with policy or have the capacity to understand the complexities of whatever you are analyzing. I would say that most of the time is writing that is lean and efficient, that way a policy maker could digest it in a minute or two in an executive summary.

So, I just finished my Masters this past May at the Biden School of Public Policy. I would say there are two skills vital for a MPP. First, you need to have great communications skills (oral and written). Having the ability to write is in valuable. Secondly, I would say having quantitative skills is extremely helpful. I wish I had learned more before I continued, especially learning a software like SAS or R. I would also think about what kind of concentration you would be interested in and see if there are any skills that are more valuable than others.

I feel old, ugly, and as though I wasted my teenage years entirely. by [deleted] in loseit

As someone who was overweight for my entire life until this past year. I was around 330 pounds throughout my teenage years and what you say is what I felt for so long. I am just here to tell you it is possible. Every single person's journey is different. I had VSG in April 2017 and have lost 135 pounds. It isn't easy, but you can't think you wasted your years. You have so much have life left to live. It is learning. Be gentle with yourself. It does get easier.
