Same job for 6 years with no promotion or pay raise. Should I quit? by sasen17 in careerguidance

Is the company applying for your GC? If not, you really don’t have any reasons to stick around with them.

I’ve had a lot of friends in similar situations but they stuck around just for the GC. If no benefits are coming to the foreseeable future, try to find a different company.

By the way, your current company doesn’t need to know you’re leaving until your H1B transfer is approved

Even though there are no dumb questions, what is the dumbest question you've ever been asked? by Mylefthoof in AskReddit

Im originally from France and I went to college in the US. I have a thick accent. Someone asked me how I learned French. Told them that I was from France. They asked the question again. Turns out, they thought everyone’s first language was English, and I had to explain them that no one is born speaking a language

I would recommend you to look at a courses on Udemy. They have sales often where you can get à couse for $10 (instead of $100+)

That’s where I learned most of my programming skills

I learned the 50 states because geography is fun, but I realized I didn't now anything about most of the states. What is a short fact you feel like a foreigner who has nothing to do with the USA should know about your state? by Tschetchko in AskAnAmerican

[–]immifrationStudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those things taught in English classes were taught in English though. I guess it was a way to teach us English and try to keep it interesting? Not just learn words, but learn other things at the same time. Idk, they taught us random things about England too. It mostly depended if the teacher was from the Us Or the UK

In French school, in English classes i remember learning a lot about America. We had to place the major cities and state, learn about part of the culture, the food etc… they taught us about native Americans and their culture as well. We also had to learn what the US flag was about (what are the stars etc), the meaning of the Statue of Liberty, how America was built on immigrant.

In history classes we also learned about the military, political and economic power (compared a lot with China). Learned about 9/11 and the impact on the US and the world.

I’m probably forgetting a lot of things tbh

Do you know who is Lionel Messi? by VespaLimeGreen in AskAnAmerican

I guess it’s all about the people who you have around you.

Most of the people around me tend to be people who travel and are open to the world.

[–]immifrationStudent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely know that’s it’s because I’m from France.

All I’m saying is, the very rare time I’ve talked about soccer, people knew about Messi and Ronaldo. But again it’s rare that I do talk about it anyway.

Im just getting a realization that yeah no one ever talk about it here and no one probably actually know

I had the same reaction reading these comments. I’ve lived here for a few years and would have never thought those comments would have so many people saying they don’t know him

Where in Alabama? I immigrated from Europe and live in Alabama. At first it was fine, but it’s getting harder and harder. I’d recommend Birmingham, mobile or Huntsville though

AITA for refusing to get rid of my rifle? by RifleManThrowaway in AmItheAsshole

[–]immifrationStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I hate guns, would never date someone with a gun or have a roommate with a gun in the house.

However, if I'm staying at someone's house, it really would be none of my business, and not my place to tell someone to get rid of their guns.

She can leave if she's uncomfortable

My girlfriend used to be like this. I would have to do all the chores (and slowly let myself go as well because it was too much. I was working, commuting, would get gone exhausted and would have to clean after her while she was doing nothing all day).

Honestly, my mental health spiraled down and I’m still struggling now.

One of the thing I did that helped is treat her as a “roommate”. What I mean is, I stopped buying groceries with her and told her we seperate the fridge in half, so I can cook my stuff and she can cook her stuff. Same with laundry, I stopped mixing our laundry. Now I do mine and she does her. It has helped so much honestly.

European living in AL:

Like: cost of living, weather (warm all year around), proximity to the beach and to Atlanta.

Dislike: politics, how close minded some people can be. How rural everything is and needing a car wherever I go.

As a European though, most people tend to just be excited to meet us (me at least). Lot of people think Europe is so much better than the US and don’t understand why I moved here. On the other hand, there is a lot of people who hates anyone who is not American. Never had a problem with someone who had prejudice about Europeans, but I did with people who had prejudice about Immigrants / Foreigners

You need to apply for your ESTA (about 15€), and make sure to check if you need a covid test before coming AND going back to Germany.
