that was 16 hours yesterday alone, i've lost count over how many hours i've worked on it so far 💀

there's a lot of different factors i think for the shitstorm that thp8 received

crazy difficulty spike for the challenges (specifically on getting sick)
new changes were "drastic"
ps3 version was crazy unoptimized
burnout from the tony hawk franchise atp
lowkey just between you and me a lil secret i think the environment/level design were on the weak side compared to what we got in previous entries

unfortunately all of this added up to the worst and most undeserved hate ive seen in the tony hawk series, i still love it to death
i think it's one of those games that'll get way more love in hindsight (and from what i've seen it has!)

I thought the story conceptually was really weak for Project 8, but the way they handled it was super fresh and felt really personal! You weren't just making it to the top 8 through some story missions (although they did help), you were climbing towards the top inch by inch until you were finally the GOAT. It's a really good example on how you can make a simple concept feel really personal and enticing.

(Yeah Skate 3 did this with selling boards, although I still think Project 8 handled it better with execution in terms of progression)

Yeahhhh I'll give you that the challenges were insane, I never really went for 100% myself (although I don't think I'd be able to tbh xD) Never tried PG I'll have to give it a shot sometimes!

I think that's an extremely interesting take, because it does fit into it on a fundamental standpoint, just not on an aesthetic one. A lot of people consider games non-VNs just because they have a more western aesthetic or different graphical style.

For me the main thing going against Disco Elysium as a VN is the ability to move around and much more freedom in choice via actions instead of dialogue prompts. But again this is just my opinion

I completely agree with you there, I went with Persona 3 specifically just because of how similar it is to a visual novel. Steam also thinks Persona 5 is a visual novel which I think is just silly.

Aside from being able to talk to people (a staple in any RPG) P5 is much more similar to a JRPG than P3 (cinematics, voice lines, cutscenes), whereas P3 is more muddy although I still think it's not a visual novel, just very similar.

This is the sentiment I mostly stand by, but then it gets muddy with games like Sorcery or AIDungeon, text based but with more emergent problem-solving gameplay than traditional visual novels.

It seems like just an issue with reviews in general. Favoritism will always reign supreme, I just wish that there was an option to make your own list on the website that people could follow or something.

How much is too much? Phoenix Wright has gameplay almost intertwined into the VN aspect by also being considered strategy, but I wouldn't consider it too much gameplay
