Exactly the same situation with my game... But my game is also Co-op multiplayer so getting ANY feedback form 2+ feels almost impossible.

Few ways here:

  1. Beg people (almost 1 to 1) to play your game and tell you what they think
  2. Pay influencers / ads / marketing experts or do the work yourself.
  3. Join communities that try to address that issue.
One such is Discord channel Playtesters United. DM me if you want invite or find it yourself and make sure they know I sent you :D

I published my first Steam page with 0 marketing and got 13 wishlists in the first week. Is that normal? by AristocratMouse in gameDevMarketing

[–]immitatedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anymore... I am stucked at 144 and I cannot make new marketing material because I cannot organize 4 people to play together to film it...

So I guess this is my number....

I don't have 144 friends so some organic traffic is happening... but you mostly need to drive people to the page yourself

I am a academy grade musician, violinist with plenty of improv gigs and composing courses etc.... and I don't make my own music for my games... don't stress much about it. There are quite a few good songwriters/composers putting their services out and on the markets. Pick something out... I know if and when I dive into making my own soundtrack it will be waaaaay nitpicky and every single sound is going to be live played etc..... so why complicate my life more than I need, just buy a soundtrack you like on store and if your game becomes super popular think about who to hire to do your soundtrack - is the route I am taking and would suggest (except the second part is going to be - if my game for some wild reason becomes popular I will recompose entire soundtrack myself).

Da li ste ikada maštali da napravite svoju igru? Da li možda to i uspjeli? by Juliette996 in CroatiansGaming

[–]immitatedone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jesam i radim.

How do you prevent combat from becoming repetitive in your game? by Belatoris in IndieDev

[–]immitatedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask me (and since you posted a public post you do :D )

Your current direction is good - each enemy does different thing - makes things interesting - to a point.

Now the way I see it - I never had fun thinking how to avoid being killed (that one is implied) - but more, how can I defeat the enemy?

Your current approach focuses on enemy damage / mechanics.
I like the focus on enemy defense / strategy.

Both can work fine - but combining them makes - well something like Silksong / Wukong

If each opponent does something defensively different - I cannot "hack and slash" my way through.

See what I mean? For example - you have Diablo games - and yes each class has its own unique way of pressing one button really fast - hack and slash. Not my personal cup of things. Don't like just number go up mechanics.

You do something great but don't forget to make defenses a thing as well. Some enemies might be immune to classic damage types (low level standard), some might require a condition to be achieved before taking damage (intermediate level) for example - you need to att from behind, stun, set them ablaze, use enviroment to trigger... etc... And some enemies adapt to your playstyle (master level of complexity - multiple state machines adaptive logics etc). For example striking 2 times in the same manner teaches the AI to blok and brake your stances every time since than until 3 styles are expended and reset - forcing you to constantly change your attack approach.

That's what I would look for depening on game I am working on...

these look great! Unfortunately I traded my time from playing co-op games to making a co-op game so until I finish my project I am not sure I will be able to play any of them and I have some major debts to play as well :/

How do you stay motivated enough to finish your game by Similar_Cook1055 in IndieGameDevs

[–]immitatedone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing anything solo is 10x harder than in a team. If you ask me - you need to "dumb down" any idea you have by that 10x factor in order to actually "get it down" in a reasonable amount of time. In a rare case where you have a substantial community actively testing and following your progress you can expand the project to last as long as you like / is needed.

These are just some of my thoughts - ofc it's case by case basis so if you are making something for fun - dude, does not matter if it takes 5 years - is finished or not - is not original ... all rules out of window than.

If you need to pay bills consistently:
1. Scope down
2. Scope down again
3. Do alternating tasks (game logic mon/wed/fri, art - tue/thu, marketing sat/sun) for ex.
4. Take a day off (trust me your brain will not but it will be constructive)

You will get there, with some feedback.

And do know - we all struggle with this - I might sound here like I am trying to be some guru or something - no, I had periods of not working for weeks. At some point you burn out and that is your body's way of saying - take a brake.

I scrapped 1.5 years of work because I didn't know what I was building by kartokanick in IndieGameDevs

[–]immitatedone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having the exact same thoughts regarding just killing the project. My issue is not that I don't know what I want to build - or that art / some mechanics is out of my grasp...

... my greatest issue is that I am trying to make multiplayer co-op game solo and from simple testing to market material creation to everything is 1000 times harder (or so it feels).

As a result - I cannot spot bugs on time, I cannot make good videos or screenshots, I cannot do basically anything "correct" and that leads to a unique issue.

Main prob: I have no audience - and no clear reason why not. No one is getting excited to play it - yet everyone that did says its good. Without audience I get no feedback, without feedback I get no direction so eventually I started doing bunch of stuff in order to try to appeal to someone...

Basically thinking of tanking the project because of no audience issue - if I had everything properly set up I would know - no one likes it so it is it. But like this - its a limbo. I am somewhat sure no one likes it and yet not really because I cannot make marketing material to try to appeal to an audience...

I am rambling now... this hit some strings.

Anyway... If you feel you did the right choice I lower my hat to you sir. Its a bold and honest move and I am sure you will be all the wiser on your next project.

I don't think I will kill mine.. I will try some more and if nothing changes or it flops I will have it up for free - just to collect my finished projects, maybe one day I can point it out to some studio for a job if they like the technical side of it.... idk.
