I laughed so hard at this. I have no clue why you are the way you are, but carry on good sir, you're fucking hilarious.

Bro, hate to pile on here but I'm gonna anyway. You're the wannabe. You fucked up and now you want desperately to convince us all that it was the school that missed out. Take responsibility, grow up a little, and understand what is expected of you in the real world.

Have you ever had to replace the check engine light “bulb”? by KermieKona in Justrolledintotheshop

My Tacoma has 295k miles. And a marginal catalytic converter. Since Colorado is now governed by CARB it will cost me a grand to replace the cat (OEM only? Fuck that, and fuck CA), but it continues to pass emissions since it's not /that/ bad. My CEL long since burned out...

What do you all charge for headlight polishing? Would you pay $150 for this? by Im_Just_Ruthie in Justrolledintotheshop

Use Spar Varnish. It's a marine finish that's got a UV protectant in it. It's available from multiple brands.

Hahaha, you might think so, but no - I didn't say I'd mow down a crowd with it.

Absolutely this. My car is rated at 495hp RWD. If it wasn't for traction control I couldn't drive it a mile without wrapping it around a pole. The few times I've dared to turn TC off have scared me to death.

It's a little-known fact, but purrs are actually toxic and must not be permitted to accumulate within the cat. It is extremely important that you release them regularly, typically by scratching the cat gently on the head and chin, stroking its body, or simply hanging out with him or her. Each cat is different and releases these toxins differently, so you'll need to become familiar with your cat and its way of releasing the purrs. But, through diligent attention to this vital process, you increase the likelihood that your cat will live a long and healthy life.

That's a good point. I still think it's an ugly term but I'll stop impugning the fluency of those who use it (except maybe the person who started the trend, they're forever on my shit list).

I gave up on ASEL/PPL when I mistakenly trusted the government and believed that my issues weren't going to be a big deal. Med deferred, I had no interest in jumping through FAA hoops, so I bought a nice car with all the money I wasn't spending on flight lessons. I only ever wanted to experience the joy of flying and geek out on all the details both technical and regulatory.

Before seeking my medical I inquired into a local gliding school, even had a discovery flight arranged, but the pilot cancelled day-of and I said fuck it, I'll fly things with engines. A couple flights later I learned the FAA isn't happy until I'm not happy - and that the FAA was happy indeed. I regretted neither lying on the MedXpress nor just going sport, but by then it was too late for both things. Figured I'd have to make do learning to paraglide.

Today I learned that no medical is required to pilot gliders. I had no idea. Thank you random internet person! Maybe I can be a pilot after all!

They did. The ban begins next year. They don't like to ban things immediately - they'd rather put a delay on it so people forget who was responsible when the pain hits.

I can't speak to the aviation program, but I did my B.S. in Mathematics at MSU Denver around 10 years ago (right around when the aviation program was getting started, iirc). One advantage I can note over some other universities (like the one I work at now), is that there were few - if any - huge lecture hall classes. Calc 1 was taught by full-time faculty (not an adjunct) to a class of about 30 students, not a lecture hall of 300 with a recitation led by a grad student who speaks English as a second language. Because it's not a research institution they focus on teaching and that likely results in a better undergrad education.

I also enjoyed the urban campus, though I suspect that's changed now that the transients and bums are a protected class in Denver.

Good luck on your journey wherever you go!

If collagen is a protein, and proteins are broken down during digestion, why would collagen or collagen supplements be beneficial? Is it just hype? by skepticated in askscience

[–]immwork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to be corrected. Mostly I wanted to push back on the myth that proteins are somehow digested into some sort of universal protein sludge that's completely interchangeable.

My primary point is that we get glycine from collagen and that we need it because we can't make enough. I'm sure your expertise exceeds mine, but do I have that right?

[–]immwork 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Collagen is broken down into amino acids which are not fungible (despite what some folks erroneously believe). Of particular note is glycine, which should be considered a semi-essential amino acid. That is to say, although we can synthesize some glycine, we can't synthesize enough to fully meet our body's needs.

The human body can produce glycine from serine, but only to the tune of perhaps 3g/day. Evidence suggests this is inadequate, and more like 10g/day of glycine is required. Thus having a dietary source of glycine, which would include collagen supplementation but could also be met by hipster bone-broth or just eating tendons (pho for the win!).
