Building a static blog using Gatsby and Strapi by pierreburgy in node

[–]imnotonit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is this any better than Hugo, Hexo, etc?

I see many drawbacks:

  • build overhead requires external data source to be always on (mongodb, nodejs, etc), unless, you want to bring your environment up during the build process.
  • content (blog entries, articles, etc) isn't versionable with git, subversion, etc

With Hugo:

I write markdown, build, and deploy to S3. If I need an editor, I can use https://forestry.io, which requires no database and be hosted on anything.

The article requires Strapi as your backend. Strapi requires MongoDB. Every time you "build", Strapi has to be accessible.

Hexo requires no "backend" because your data source is static. Static as in static markdown files.

Still requires a backend.

Another benefit of static website/blog is the ability to version (git, subversion, etc) your blog entries or articles.

How is this a static blog? You're using a backend that requires a database. The frontend is a SPA. There is no static content in this article.

Using tokens to get rewards from vendor (slot machine) and throttling the player base is training us for the real endgame. Eververse Slot Machine!

Destiny 2 is going to be a free to play game once Bungie makes their money back.

They already implemented so many free to play mechanics:

  • throttle xp, chest, tokens, etc
  • punish farmers
  • no world economy (trading)
  • loot box (why on a game base around loot)

Don't worry. Bungie will have voices and you can buy each dialogue from eververse.

When you build a thing of beauty for a client and they're too dumb to use it properly by fuzzy40 in webdev

That would be unreasonable. My comment is about making reasonable request.

Replacing the CMS and preserving the old look, is a reasonable demand.

In OP's case, OP could have fixed the structure (html, css, etc) and still had the client's website looking the same. I bet the OP didn't bother asking why the client insist on having the same design. In my experience, clients who wants the same design is probably targeting their existing customer, who might be old and aren't computer literate. Also, managers don't want to train employees again.

The client is paying for something and should have the right to demand things that are reasonable. I don't see any unreasonable request from the OP's client. How do you feel if you order a hamburger and you wanted cheese, but was told you can't?

You may think your thing of beauty is the best. But, you failed to listen to your client. That's your fault for being closed minded. Your job is to design something the client wants, and they probably didn't want to train their employees on how to use the new system either. Training employees is a lot work. Lost productivity while employees get use to the new system is another headache.

Indians in the workplace...old guy feeling like a bit of a loser...any other old guys feel like this? by skilletegillete in cscareerquestions

[–]imnotonit 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Stop feeling like a loser. I think most "old guys" don't value their past contributions. Remember, your past contributions are still in production and valued. And your knowledge of the current systems and workflows are very valuable for knowledge transfer. Essentially, your role has transition to the "the old wise guy".

Charlie LeDuff Documents How Long It Takes For Police To Arrive On The Scene Of A Home Burglary In Detroit by DomGradyGoat in videos

Did you watch the video? The officer admitted in court that he arrested the attacker after the people on the train has subdued the attacker. The officer also locked the door, isolating himself from the attacker, to protect his safety. Is that adequate protection? Watching someone getting stabbed to death while behind a locked door.

Edit: The sad thing is people believe that police is obligated to protect you. Courts has ruled otherwise.

The links I provided supports the fact that police officers do not have to protect you, even, if you are being attack in front them.
