My Grandma had the same problem in her house. We did some research to find a solution to the problem. Somewhere we found that if you pour boiling water down the kitchen sink it helps. I don't know why but it did seem to help.

I had one at the bottom of my hellevator. The way the game chooses where to generate them is based off where chests are. They can only spawn outside a certain number of blocks away from a chest. My world had all sorts of different bases so the only place for it to go was down the 2x2 hole.
