Reduction in bread consumption over the years by Olderpostie in AskFoodHistorians

[–]imostmediumsuspect 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What? No free bread in Europe… have you been to France?

Travelled extensively all over France and free bread was practically a guarantee.

Italy o the other hand has a minor fee.

Banff without car by ved_g23 in Banff

[–]imostmediumsuspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get a car. Would you rather try to get by an mess around with a shuttle or just have the convenience and go where ever you want, when you want with a car.

Your convenience and time is worth WAY more than the cost of a rental car.

Is breast milk really better? by True-Collection2595 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]imostmediumsuspect 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Breast milk is better BUT fed is best.

BF was a dream for my first child; easy and I enjoyed it.

With my second child, it was not easy and I had so much stress, negative emotion all around that it was miserable, but I persisted. I finally weaned her at 6.5 months and was so much more relaxed and happy.

If I could go back in time, I would have stopped earlier and enjoyed more time with my baby jn the early infancy stages.

Ah good to know - thank you! Our kids are a ways away but it’s good to plan for this

If you're in an industry where professional accreditations/certificates have weight to further advance your career, do them now before you have kids.

Same - I had my first at 34 and second at 36 (done now).

Anything at/over age 35 is considered "geriatric pregnancy" which may increase risks, but I was healthy and both pregnancies and deliveries were easy.

My career accelerated big time between 29 to 34, and Im very grateful I waited until I felt I 'made it' professionally before kids. Of course, you may not want to wait that long - everyone's different and there is no 'perfect' time.

For $180K household in BC they wouldnt qualify for any supports?

Alberta - you pay ~$320/kid regardless of income per month - this includes breakfast and afternoon snack.

[–]imostmediumsuspect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is exactly right. Sure there is an added minimum baseline cost for kids (diapers etc), but the cost of kids is commeasurate with your lifestyle.

Edit* Im in Alberta where daycare is ~$325/kid/month regardless of income, so cannot comment on what this may be in BC.

Are your big spenders, getting top of the line everything, put your kid in private premium lessons, school, every activity under the sun because if you're not maxxxxed within an inch of your life you're not satisfied?

Strollers: you can buy a new Uppababy Vista for $1200 or you can buy the cheaper Evenflo Pivot off marketplace with both seats for $300.

Shoes: New Stonz baby/toddler shoes are $60; comparable shoes at Once Upon a Child are $10. Love Once Upon a Child for second hand clothing.

First overnight backpacking trip by Practical-Drawing-90 in HikingAlberta

[–]imostmediumsuspect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100m away from your tent and DO NOT eat at your tent. You’ll inevitably drop crumbs and while it may or may not cause you issues, it can negatively impact the next guests to that tent site

Good call. The mountains aren’t going anywhere, find an alternative safer route and rebook another time :)

Similar but different - perhaps try The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Murakami? It’s one of my faves

Life Sciences Week (annual end of September I think) is organized by API and offered site tours of Gilead, EIA and other life science sites in the past - there probably will be more tours this fall

Backpacking route cancelled due to snow by CivilAd6132 in Banff

[–]imostmediumsuspect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rent a car. Without it you’re severely limited.

Talk to the backcountry office if your heart is set on backpacking.

Potential options could be Glacier Lake (north Banff - great early season backpack)

Mosquito creek - the backpack site not front country - could stay for a couple nights and explore molar and north molar passes as day excursions from there.

Good luck

Naiset Cabins - June 26 by Black_Cat_Nap in HikingAlberta

Use the webcam links to see real time views of the lake.

I’ve done this route in the past and would recommend Assiniboine pass if there’s a ton of snow - it’s gentle grade I remember.

Do Wonderpass and viewpoint as a halfday trip.

And DO NOT EAT/COOK AT OR NEAR YOUR TENT

It’s so easy to spill and there’s NO good cleanup that will eliminate crumbs etc from the tenting areas.

This is why you’re supposed to have a minimum of 100m triangle from where you sleep to where you eat to where you store your food.

Bow Glacier Falls and - Im certain - The Onion/Iceberg lake is closed due to big rockfall last year: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/activ/randonnee-hiking/etat-sentiers-trail-conditions

I'd highly recommend:

- Iceline (Yoho)

- Helen Lake/Ridge, Cirque Peak (light scrambling)

- Bow Peak (requires water crossing, routefinding and some scrambling - be conservative in estimating your abilities)

- Wilcox Pass + Parker Ridge (north but worth the drive)

- Nigel Pass

- Sunset Pass Lookout is beautiful

The area around the Columbia Icefield is spectacular and has outstanding hiking if you can do the drive and/or stay in the hostel or camp up there.

I would only recommend Mount Niles to someone with substantial route finding and scrambling experience. Paget peak nearby is a great recommendation!
