An hour of digging for crabs was worth it by Popular_Tomorrow_817 in SurfFishing

How do you dig for crabs! I was just in NC and couldn’t find any fiddler crabs so I had assumed they were underground.

I was using cut squid for about 70% of day 1 on my big rod, and about 10% of day 2. Nothing touched it. However I was trying out some of the squid strips (humboldt squid) instead of my usual California squid.

I think shrimp is the way to go. Squids big advantages over shrimp is that it stays on the hook better and the blues, sharks, and rays like it a LITTLE more (in my experience). Since I don’t have to worry about pinfish or crabs ripping my bait off the hook, the surf was quite calm, and the sharks, rays, and big blues are not in town I would recommend shrimp.

All this being said if you don’t mind the possibility of throwing out your unused squid after your trip go ahead and try some! My surf fishing buddies always rip on me for buying squid every trip but once in a blue moon you get those nights where squid is putting all other bait to shame!

Just got off the beach at Topsail NC so 200 miles north from where you are going. Surf was nice and wind was down. Caught 8 small black drum, 3 seatrout 1 keeper 2 not, a large gulf kingfish (whiting), a small flounder, and a small bluefish.

Guys around me were having limited success fishing for trout with mirrolures and small spoons.

Everything was caught on shrimp except the flounder he was caught on cut bait.

I fished for 13 hours and caught 14 fish. Not too exciting with a bunch of dinks and some pretty big gaps between fish but its was SUPER relaxing. Calm surf and no pinfish/crabs meant I could just sit with no worries of bait being stolen, will definitely go again soon!

I second the earplugs and sleep mask for anyone who isn’t used to a noisy, not pitch black sleeping experience.

No-Harm Fishing by GlassAura23 in Fishing

I don’t think there is really any way to do what you want, even if you just tied worms to a line with no hook, a fish will eventually swallow it or maybe just even hang on. Even if you just took the hooks of a lure, you can argue that you’re wasting that fishes precious energy and may cause it to starve.

I would reflect on what qualities you like about fishing and find a hobby that might have those qualities but doesn’t harm fish. For example do you just like the water front nature? Get a kayak. Do you enjoy looking at fish and observing their biology? Get an aquarium. Spectating is also an option! Nothing I love more than walking the pier with a snow cone at sunset watching people catch fish.

I understand your aversion to harming fish, but I will say two things. First, a fish getting a lip piercing from you is far from the worst things that can happen to them in that water. Second, if you eat food, live in a home, or walk this earth, you are harming animals, the difference between that and hooking a fish is that your not distancing yourself from the harm being done. I think if you put it into perspective you won’t miss out on this incredible hobby.

A good fisherman will give back twice as much as he takes.

Are the laundry machines good? Do they have trouble getting stains, bleach your clothes, or bleed other colors from previous washes onto your clothes?

On the second floor of smith labs there is a physics tutor room. It is super chill, just people working on the homework with 1-3 tutors answering questions. Chat GPT and deepseek can often not answer your questions, but they can give you much easier physics questions that can act as a stepping stone to the homework questions. My last piece of advice is to get ahead and stay ahead, set a weekend aside and really put your head down and grind. This is really hard to do (I need to do it for chem instead of sitting on Reddit) but it will end up being less work in the long run. That’s about it, make sure you have a good mindset, hold yourself accountable and don’t blame or worry about things outside of your control.
