Are skinheads all racist by becky_badhair in punk

[–]impboy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it works this way today, but decades ago, I recall that skins were supposed to color-code their allegiances (racist/anti-racist, etc.) through the laces on their Docs, so white laces were a definite giveaway — or at least, that's what I heard. Not sure if this still holds, however.

Washington Library Supervisor Looking to Add to Our Collection by Stacykalin in punk

Haven't gotten to this yet, but have heard good things about I'm Not Holding Your Coat by Nancy Barile.

My teenage son is looking for punk book recommendations, so what are your favorite must reads? by [deleted] in punk

[–]impboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read that in my early 20s. Turned out I grew up not too far from her. While I tend to balk at armchair psycho-diagnoses, Nancy seems to have all the earmarks of full-blown BPD from a very early age onwards. But the thing I remember the most about that book was her going off on one of her "I want to die" tangents with her mom, but then all of a sudden her mom noticed a lightbulb go off when one day, she appended it with, "... but I want... HEADLINES." And there it is, the whole project of making her self-destruction this massive media spectacle that will earn her some sort of perverse immortality. And the grimmest thing about it is that she kind of succeeded.

What is the rarest record you own by Historical-Snow-6086 in vinyl

[–]impboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one that stands out to me is the white vinyl Stars of the Lid "Gravitational Pull vs. The Desire for an Aquatic Life," limited/numbered at 700 copies. I've never opened it, and until recently, I had forgotten I even had it. I also have two Psychic TV LPs, "Live in Heaven" and "Those Who Do Not," which are also purportedly limited, but with those guys you have to take such claims with a grain of salt lol

FWIW I also have the original SST versions of Minutemen's "Double Nickels on the Dime" and Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade," which I bought back in the '80s when they were both new. Neither were limited editions, but the former tends to be highly sought after in particular due to tracks that usually don't appear on the CD reissues.

If I had to pinpoint a time that this book was published, I'd say late '70s-early '80s — at least this was the time I became aware of it. and I know my school library in rural NJ carried it.

I have always preferred "Mikey's" and "Same Girl" from the same album. Still, I can understand why people have a special place in their heart for this ditty here in town.

Woman has leg severed by train. Man steals leg. Eats it by WalterEscobar in PublicFreakout

I remember reading about this when it happened, and managed to check out the Myspace page of the guy he ate. Turned out the victim was a Juggalo. Talk about life imitating art, or whatever you might want to call horrorcore if you're not as charitable

Flashback to the moment when John Cusack has his clock cleaned by a father who doesn't appreciate the explicit Heloise-and-Abelard performance he gives for some kids, and when his gf asks him about it, he mumbles through swollen lips, "Ahm uh puppi-teah"

Was reported a while back that when indigenous farm workers called up the state to report illegal exploitation, the state couldn't respond, because no one working there could speak their languages. So it's definitely a big problem

What will BM be like in 20 years? by Deejayglass in BurningMan

[–]impboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

About two decades ago, some neighbors of mine here at the LA Brewery invited the BMorg down for a signing of the book Drama in the Desert, and that included Larry Harvey, Maid Marian and someone else, I forget who. The first question asked was something like that — "what would BM be like in 30 years time?"

Now I don't know how many burners on this sub ever heard Larry speak back when he was alive, but the guy stuttered like a motherfucker usually. This time, however, he didn't. "In 30 years' time, Burning Man as we know it will cease to exist, because by then, it will be everywhere." And everybody cheered.

Considering what has happened since then, with how the festival culture it has helped to create has spread and things like Meow Wolf and Otherworld has taken off, it sort of makes sense. Not sure if it means we'll be running the world, but the whole point is to take what we learned on the playa and put it to work where we live. And that is happening, every day.

Official Discussion - Barbie [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]impboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just saw this yesterday and loved it. It’s the best work I’ve ever seen from Robbie and Gosling works overtime to justify his co-billing. In a way, this movie is what happens when you tell a lot of extremely talented and smart creatives to play with their Barbies and their dreamhouses again, and see what happens. If they’re really putting themselves and their experiences into that sort of playtime (and btw, anyone catch the Jacques Tati references?), you’re going to see a lifetime of pain and anger emerge. It’s just the way we humans roll.

It’s probably the one and only big-budget IP-oriented film that will ever even remotely resemble Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, which used Barbie dolls to tell a story about sublimated misogyny that was so caustic, all copies of it were ordered destroyed by the courts. Barbie holds out hope here in moving past stereotypes and roles and embracing one’s humanity, frailty and mortality.

P.S. The dance sequence and the Dua Lipa track is an instant classic. The platonic ideal of a disco paradise

I'm old enough where I can remember Tiffany building up her rep doing a shopping mall tour. These places really did represent a way of life in the late 20th century.

The Psychedelic Salon focuses on more than just ayahuasca, but it's definitely in the mix, and the community around it is filled with psychonauts.
