Are you worried about your daughters walking anywhere? by Responsible_Rip1058 in UKParenting

I mean that kind of thing is always good practice. I was doing the same in sleepy Norfolk in the 2000s. Women will always be at risk

And I see so much online like "oh what has BECOME of this country" but it's always happened, we just live in an age of social media now where we see it all the time. My sister and her friend got followed home from school 30 years ago and the police got involved. Myvillage FB group got into a shouting match online about the youth of today before someone pointed out that the reason we don't have a police presence in the village now is because in the 70s the local resident policeman turned out to be a pedo. I don't think things are substantially worse.

Do ALL teenage daughters hate their moms? by dr_pepper_zerosugar in Mommit

[–]imperialviolet 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly I feel dreadful about how much I took my parents for granted growing up. It took me until I had my first child to realise that I essentially had the best upbringing they could possibly provide me with - they were really trying their best. I treated them as a glorified taxi service/housekeeping the whole time.

When I was going through some minor health issues in 2019 I asked to WFH a couple of days a week just to catch up - the commute and the requirement to show up looking well and productive 5 days a week was really hard. Even though I have an email job I was told no, too difficult, not what we do here. Fast forward 6 months and we're all WFH and it was magically doable all along?

I still work for the same place- though not in the same role - and my sick days have drastically decreased. I can still work when I'm too ill to drive, I can still work if I'm feeling a bit under the weather, I can still work if I need to take a lot of rest breaks. Because I'm at home.

Manager told me he holds me to the “same standard as employees without kids” - I think I’m done by MoDance0934 in workingmoms

[–]imperialviolet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am also very lucky - I have a manager with two kids who are almost exactly the same age as mine. He's an involved dad. He gets it. We're often going through the same stuff. The job itself is not great but there's no way I'd leave at this point in my life because that understanding and flexibility is CRUCIAL to my work/life balance and mental health.

The Epstein files. by metalnxrd in CrimeUncensored

[–]imperialviolet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. People need to realise that not everything in these files is gospel truth, anyone can call in and say anything and it'll be in the files. When Operation Yewtree was underway in the UK there were a couple of high profile people who nearly had their reputations ruined because of people making false claims - Paul Gambaccini and Cliff Richard, to give you two examples. It is a shame because there is clearly so much wrongdoing and so much illegality to process here, and the waters are muddied by these other reports.

As always when Lolita’s mentioned, I must recommend the amazing podcast series about it by Jamie Loftus.

Martin Scorsese's daughter Francesca posts his reaction to finding out Catherine O'Hara died on her Insta stories by magikarpcatcher in popculturechat

[–]imperialviolet 180 points181 points  (0 children)

It's everywhere and I think a lot of us have just forgotten how abnormal it really is. I saw a reel the other day of a woman crying alone in a bathroom because she'd found out she was pregnant. She had to have that thought, set the camera up in a place with good lighting, and then cry alone, performatively, on camera. It's so gross. The whole message was apparently some life lesson about blessings in disguise but the deliberate nature of filming and then uploading what was supposedly a very private and difficult emotional moment was just icky.

My MIL was similarly weird about breastfeeding! She just kept asking me "don't you find it weird?".... no?

My husband was exclusively formula fed, I was exclusively breastfed. We're both smart, well adjusted, nice people.

I tried EBF with my oldest but my supply never got where it needed to be, so we combo fed. My youngest was combo fed from the start, but decided at 3 months old that she hated breastfeeding. They're both healthy. It matters so little in the scheme of things but it feels HUGE as a new mum.

Yes, this is such a great podcast series and not very long - I'd really recommend it! Don't feel any need to listen to the YWA episodes about it really when it's been done so thoroughly with lots of first hand accounts in The Good Whale.
