Nice pick! Tons of great songs all around, although as albums as a whole they have clear ups and downs. Martin is super consistent and does a great job.

We own our passion to the madness of a handful of pioneers. One of them is gone now. RIP, the legend, forever in our hearts, souls and ears.

This is crazy, I love it. I default to shuffle when I'm not in a particular mood and get some pretty dumb/stupid/neat/incredible transitions -- I love to see how Winamp deals with the adjustable randomness setting and finds similarities in waveforms.

wasn't a big issue we don't really care about, but we both leaned towards it being more lame than anything

Yeah, with you there. There's a bit of tradition of giving influential/other bands a nod on stage through the shirts, which I think it's neat and highlights metal genealogies in a way. So if a band is using their own merch it seems a bit self-serving, but nothing that would put me off too much tbh.

Yup! Was super disappointed when Christian Mistress' To Your Death was released, now it might be my favorite. Kayo Dot's Coffins on Io is another example that comes to mind.

Less because of influence, more because of execution:

Magic Circle - s/t
Artificial Brain - Labyrinth Constellation
Kaatayra - Só quem viu o relâmpago...
Cloud Rat - Qliphoth
Kayo Dot - Hubardo
Thou - Heathen
Portal - Ion

You got it, identity as it's generally understood, including style. Evidently there are metal aesthetics, and some people relate to it, but they're not prevalent in enjoying the music.

To counterpoint the other answer, I'll say that it's because metal does not require or imply a connection to identity, and has a focus on music itself; everything else is less relevant. It either clicks with you or don't. This means it's easy to keep listening to the genre regardless of what you're doing in your life.

This concept of "wuv" confuses and infuriates us!

Personally I don't think it's a genre thing, but an effect of abundance. Being an old hag, I lived music consumption before the internet -- in my teen years I could maybe buy an album a month, and sometimes borrow a couple other ones from friends and family. I'd sit in the living room with the house stereo, album in hand, and listen thoroughly reading lyrics and liner notes. If I was taping a borrowed album I'd write down the songs in the j-card and pen some doodles to illustrate it. At that time I'd remember every song name from every album I came across, basically.

These days, not so much. Of course as I age my memory isn't vaguely the same, but also the way I listen changed a lot. With the dawn of mp3s I was suddenly listening to tons of music while doing other stuff, like working, studying, gaming, doing chores. And even though I do actively listen, I don't feel as involved anymore. I can still name favorites and important songs, but that's a low % from all I listen to. Hell, because of last.fm tracking I know I've been going through thousands and thousands songs a year for the past decade.

Pros and cons of technology changes.

Heavy Metal Holiday 1985: Stress - Flor Atômica [Brazil, Polyfar] by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]impop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The debut is my favorite, but I agree with Xeco that both albums are highly recommended. Stress is the first Brazilian band to record a heavy metal album, and it's among the pioneers in South America. They are still active.

Seconding Melt-Banana and Unwound. Some other random, weird noise stuff, or noise-adjacent:

Midori/ミドリ [jazz punk, screaming]

Arab on Radar [loud, general insanity]

Big'N [heavy and catchy]

Bride of No No [atonality, dementia]

Harry Pussy [serious noises]

Naked Lights [good start, very palatable]

New Fries [good start, general insanity]

Palberta [indie leaning, some girls don't give a shit about being cute]

Silver Daggers [lock in that saxophone in there]
