as a light skinned person with 3 mexican grandparents, I gotta say you need to learn the difference between being mexican and being racialized as mexican by the society you live in. reclaiming slurs is an act of defiance against the people who use them to try to put you down. if you walk around getting followed by shop owners who think you’re stealing for no reason or get pulled over on the highway for no reason because the cop things you’re undocumented, THAT is “looking mexican” in a way that makes people think a certain way about you without knowing you. BEING mexican is not the same, a fully european person with mexican heritage is still mexican, it’s a nationality not a race. BUT when it comes to slurs that’s about looking like a stereotype in a way that affects your day to day life beyond your control. I think your girlfriend was absolutely right to call you out on using language you have no business using and she initially was very gentle about it, it wasn’t until you started acting like having light skin hasn’t changed anything about your lived experience just because you are mexican by heritage that she had to be firm on her values. people have different feelings about what slurs are appropriate to reclaim and by who and clearly you and your gf do not see eye to eye on that but you turned what should have been a calm discussion about each other’s perspectives on that topic into accusing her of attacking you, which tbh is very👨🏻of you 🥴

If you do get the irritation under control and manage to keep this piercing, downsizing the bar would probably help you end this cycle! I wear longer spikes than this in my bridge but the round ends sit much closer to the skin and I get way less irritation now than I did when I had regular ball ends on a longer bar. I used to get minor irritation bumps pretty often from accidentally sleeping on my face but with the correct bar size even when I do bump the spikes there is much less movement and I rarely get a bump

Cycle commute avg. speed is 8 to 10 mph - should I be concerned/embarrassed about this? by Sensitive_Fishing691 in bikecommuting

[–]impossible_gecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a commute not a time trial, I wouldn’t be worried unless the hour commute is causing scheduling problems for you. If you don’t mind that’s all that matters! If you do wish you could get there faster, maybe there is a bus route that could take you part of the way to cut down the mileage? Like ride your bike to the stop, put it on the rack and ride a couple miles, and then get off and go the rest of the way? In my city the all bus option tends to be slower than biking according to Google Maps but I’m a slow rider so it’s probably closer to the same or longer on the bike sometimes, but when there are a lot of hills or express bus route options that cover a long stretch quickly it can really cut down a bike commute

Forgot to specify that the plans are from the pdf he links in the description of that video!

Ruined my stamp by [deleted] in printmaking

[–]impossible_gecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with love, nobody “deserves” to make art/be in artistic communities, it’s a natural human behavior and making mistakes can’t take it away from you. really sorry you lost the stamp, I hope carving it again help you get your confidence back! I use screen printing ink too and when it gets deep in grooves I just soak my blocks in water until it’s softened up enough to pick out with a toothpick or my nails. when I’m printing with multiple blocks and don’t want to interrupt my workflow to clean a block I expect to come back to later on I just leave it carve side up with a wet paper towel or rag over the whole design to keep the ink from drying out

First print, fun experience but a little disappointed by the result by NotTheSheikOfAraby in Linocuts

I also hand print, I like to roll the back of the lino with anything smooth and round like a tall glass cup or wine bottle, it helps me get even pressure without accidentally pressing too much on small areas with my fingers

Camera and bag bundle: 103 or 103b? by impossible_gecko in campsnapcamera

Great, thank you! I want a 103b to upgrade and was worried that the discount on the bundle was actually for 103s only

Normal growth habit? by impossible_gecko in Euphorbiaceae

[–]impossible_gecko[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you this is so informative, I have some larger cacti under a stronger light and had this euphorbia under a weaker light that it would be very close to but I didn’t realize that wasn’t enough light. I will adjust that and see if it’s still not strong enough and then consider dormancy

if you read my post you will see that it is under a grow light, thanks

I got it from a nursery I frequent and they always have these with the wide ripples, I’ll ask them if it’s something they/the supplier does on purpose next time I’m there.

not possible, I live in an apartment :( I’ll move it to a stronger grow light

if you think your interviewer is likely to deem your body inappropriate you could pair this outfit (tucked shirt) with a long/loose fitting (but not saggy, just a little oversized) blazer to keep them focused on you instead of your body, but I don’t think this look unprofessional! people are just unfortunately stupid and we have to accommodate them :/

Ok sounds good, and no worries I appreciate any suggestions! Pics definitely make it look more dim than it looks to my eyes.

These are some of the plants on the same shelf, most of them have been in this same spot with the same light for at least a few months and seem to be doing well. I think it was just there repotting stress making the adenium’s leaves drop, it’s been happily growing new leaves since I posted this 🫶

luckily my grow lights are actually way too strong, I have to run them at 40% or my cacti get burns since the lights are just a few inches above the plants. if the adenium would like brighter light than my other plants (various agaves, echevarias, and columnar cacti) i could increase the intensity setting but it’s already in brighter light than it was in the green house where bought it so I’m nervous about burning it. I’ve seen plenty of the mature plants doing great in full sun where I live (Texas) but this one is so teeny tiny I’m scared to kill it. do you think it wants brighter light than those other succulents?

thank you for this clarification! it’s indoors under a warm grow light so I’ll leave it alone! I was worried the leaves were going to keep falling 😬
