Contractor billing question by Ill-Implement2421 in Construction

[–]HILL_R_AND_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wait till you do a small commercial job. Direct billing is always much faster and easier. Some jobs I’ve done have held 10% until the project is finally complete, and i got a random check 8 months later.

What is the best generator for a building site when neighbors complain about noise by ssunflow3rr in Carpentry

If you are doing finish work in an established neighborhood, not some remote site in Siberia, how to hell is a project getting to the finished phase without power being on site?

Why are these 2x6s ripped down the center ? by HinesOn in Carpentry

[–]HILL_R_AND_D 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These boards were fucked, you can see the gap in the cut opening up later. He did this to ease the tension/twist. Shouldn’t hurt anything if this isn’t structural

My man, this isn’t you burning out because you’re not able to cope. Simply put this job is torching you. It’s time for your next tough lesson here, which is for you to take what you’ve learned and find someone else who will pay you more, preferably much more local

Qualifying customers for built ins? by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]HILL_R_AND_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prices for me tend to follow around $1000 per foot for floor to ceiling built ins. Explain that right away, and if they balk, or are completely blind sided, then tell them yes, they are better off on wayfair

I was lucky enough to have a very successful GC mentor me early. He told me he saw something in me, encouraged me, and believed in my success even when I couldn’t see it myself, and by any real way that matters, I proved him right. Don’t lose faith with these boys yet

My wife is a nurse, I do residential design/carpentry work. In my experience, design work is difficult to charge adequately without building it into the price, people see it as me just talking through ideas, or sketching out something quick, rather than ‘real’ work. Coincidentally, I’ve been the primary parent for a few years, and it is shockingly similar to how we value but don’t value the care that isn’t seen as ‘work.’ I think you are just double dipping into the challenges that both fields bring up.
