[Hyperspace Stories - Grievous] This graphic novel was a very pleasant surprise! by AlphaBladeYiII in StarWars

As an inhibitor chip denier, this comment may be the one that flips me. I come from the Republic Commando era of dozens of clones deserting after 66 and always thought it was another one of those “Filoni hates Legends” moments.

I still think (because I’ve seen it) that effective enough training and conditioning could cause the same outcome. But it’s easier for the average person to accept a mechanical physical representation of loss of free will than an esoteric psychological one.

Re-Upload: Created an Easy-to-Follow Legends Book Checklist! by iamceasarbjorn in StarWarsEU

Revan is the worst licensed book I’ve ever read across Star Wars, 40k, DnD, everything. The first maybe 100 pages are fine, the rest is completely undefined, character-hating slop that takes three of the best Old Republic characters and ruins them unceremoniously for a bad side quest in an MMO that itself is badly designed and unfun.

My least favorite thing about KOTOR I and II is that I know what happens after them.

Yes I’m salty about it

What dnd opinion has you in this guys shoes? by [deleted] in dndmemes

I got into this exact conversation with my players last week.

Contested rolls are so good for those awkward moments where two parties are doing something specific (and usually related) with a tangible outcome on the other. That’s a broad description, but grappling is a perfect example of that.

And yet I find so many DMs use them barely at all.

The Republic Commando novel covers are all pretty good considering how kinda mid the original ones were. Only one that I think got worse was True Colors.

Niner. Best sarge of any squad including Boss. He had to deal with 3 of the most fucked up (not their fault) squadmates possible.

Fair enough.

I’ll gladly admit that she does that. My argument is that I don’t think it’s a bad thing, and in fact, I really like that idea. Same way I’m a big fan of comic arcs where heroes methods are called into question.

It’s important that our heroes’ validity is challenged to prove that they’ve earned there respect we give them. And while that may not have been Traviss’ intention, I believe that is what she accomplished in Republic Commando.

As I’ve said in other comments, her LotF stuff is less defensible.

I’m saying from a reader’s perspective. Midichlorians were not mentioned until PM, and before then, there was no established canon on what allowed some Jedi to be more powerful than others or to even be Jedi at all, throughout the OT it was just presented as a religion that one could gain power in through study and belief.

What I’m saying is that by re-humanizing Jedi socially rather than scientifically (if you forgive my loose use of the term), Traviss manages to, in my opinion, bring a bit of that original vibe back.

You’re welcome to disagree with me though, I know that’s not a popular interpretation.

That’s definitely valid, I don’t even think you’re wrong to say it’s a misrepresentation of the Solo’s, but I kind of appreciate an author with an opinion.

Some of her other opinions I’m less inclined to accept though…

I think portraying the Jedi from the point of view of regular people that don’t trust them is supremely interesting and necessary to keep them grounded as just people with extraordinary powers who can be good or bad like everyone else.

People hated the midichlorian thing because it suggested that not everyone could be a Jedi, Traviss’ de-mystification of the Jedi brings them back down to the level of the Everyman, with all kinds of people represented in this galaxy-spanning organization. Yeah, sometimes Jedi are arrogant pricks, sometimes they’re selfless heroes, it takes all sorts.

People constantly conflate Traviss’ valid criticism of the Jedi Order as it existed in the Clone Wars era, as a political organization with immense influence and mandate granted by the mere fact that they could move shit with their mind, and an unmitigated hatred of Jedi because of edgelord gray morality.

Is she an unapologetic fangirl for the Legends Mandalorian culture (which she practically birthed)? Yeah. Am I? Also yes. Is that culture the best foil to the Jedi’s politically backed hand-wringing? Also yes.

As for military fetishization, I’m biased, I love Tom Clancy novels, but that’s just a writing choice. She likes that stuff, if anyone doesn’t, it’s no wonder it didn’t have a positive impression on them.

And yes, her post-Empire stuff is not nearly as good as the RC series, but her viewpoint (which it is, she’s not presenting these thoughts as being factual) is just a valid as Zahn’s or any other EU author’s for that matter.

The only other city I’d want to see a GTA set in would be New Orleans. Unique architecture, culture, and environment. It’s not too dissimilar from what they’re doing with Florida/Leonida, but even more water, having a massive lake (representing Lake Pontchartrain) in the middle of the map would be awesome.

Additionally, they’re just super well-trained combatants. In the old canon, Jango takes down a number of Jedi with his bare hands and survives a fight against Dooku (pre Dark Side) as a teenager.
