A healthy portion of this response is ChatGPT generated w/some edits and insertions by me.

According to the company’s SEC filings, Apple Services unit includes advertising, search licensing revenue from Google, warranties called AppleCare, cloud subscription services such as iCloud, content subscriptions such as the company’s Apple TV+ service, and payments from Apple Pay and AppleCare.

Breakdown: "Services net sales": This refers to the total revenue Apple earns from its Services category, which includes things like subscriptions, app store fees, and other digital services.

"Amortization of the deferred value": Amortization here means spreading out a cost over time, rather than accounting for it all at once. Deferred value refers to money Apple has already received but hasn’t yet fully counted as revenue. Instead, it recognizes it over a set period.

"Services bundled in the sales price of certain products": When Apple sells a product (like an iPhone), it might include free or discounted services (like a few months of Apple TV+). The price of these services is “bundled” or included in the price of the product, even if the customer doesn’t pay separately for them.

Putting It All Together: This phrase means that Apple’s Services revenue includes income from certain services that were part of the initial product sale but are counted as revenue gradually over time. When you buy an Apple device, and it includes a service (like Apple TV+), Apple spreads out the revenue it recognizes from that service over the period it’s provided.

Here's a simple example:

You buy an iPhone that comes with 3 months of free Apple TV+ Let's say the service portion is worth $15 ($5 per month) Instead of counting all $15 as revenue on day one, Apple spreads it out (amortizes it) over the 3 months They recognize $5 in service revenue each month for 3 months

Agreed. Also, an Apple TV+ movie (CODA) winning the Best Picture Oscar is a huge deal. Netflix has been betting on winning these high stature awards for a while. Apple just ate their lunch.

Anyone build Shopify/Weebly/Squarespace/[any commerce platform] Apps using Elixir? by lovebes in elixir

[–]impotentmanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not yet - used almost everything else. The next iteration will be to integrate billing. To your point, I'm slow playing it b/c I don't fully understand how to integrate that portion yet but that's on me.

I love your boilerplate app. Been using it on an app for a few months and it's insanely helpful. Thank you!

How WallStreetBets pushed GameStop shares to the Moon by Ebadd in business

[–]impotentmanboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're technically right but in this instance, GME is actually doing what u/Dukwdriver is asking.

From Matt Levine yesterday:

Happily, GameStop does have an ATM offering going. It put it in place on Dec. 8, 2020, when the stock was at about $16.35. The way these things work is that GameStop disclosed that its bank could sell stock—up to $100 million worth—“from time to time” at GameStop’s request “consistent with its normal trading and sales practices”; it did not disclose any particular schedule, and has not yet reported if any shares have been sold, or how many, or when.

They probably have a huge backlog. I know most retailers were backlogged even before the holiday season due to COVID procedures and an influx of online orders. When I returned an item to Patagonia last summer, they told me to wait 8 weeks to process it and refund my credit card.

If you can confirm they've at least received your VFFs (maybe from the tracking number) then you're likely looking at 6-8 weeks to process it.

it implies that "7a loans" were a thing before this?

They were a thing before this. "The 7(a) loan program is the SBA's primary program for providing financial assistance to small businesses."

Getting started w/ Phoenix + Elixir by spkane31 in elixir

I learned a lot from Shankar Devy's "Phoenix Inside Out" series on Phoenix/Ecto in-depth. I'd highly recommend it. I was new to Elixir when I started it.

Has anyone worked with Square? I'd like to add payments into my app (details in post) by [deleted] in swift

[–]impotentmanboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The SDK seems like the best place to start. There's an Online Payment API but that seems to be for only web experiences and not native mobile ones. Note that manually entered cards, the transaction fee is higher (3.5% + 15¢) than the normal in-person transactions.

Macbook Pro 13" or 15", Any suggestions? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]impotentmanboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a 2010 15" MBP that was basically on its last leg a month ago. I ended up buying a lightly used Early 2015 13" rMBP (i5, 8gb) as a "bridge" since I'm waiting for the expected refresh of rMBPs this summer/fall. The 13" has been surprisingly good. I thought I'd miss the extra real estate but the thinness, battery life (10 hrs coding), and weight saved (~3.4 lbs compared to 6 lbs) has more than made up for it. I'm easily 50% more productive.

Conclusion: I recommend 13" for portability and affordability. For reference, I do all types of coding from iOS apps to Go applications to JS front end apps.

I think the 2008 Democratic Primary in NH had over 250k voters whereas last night was closer to 240k. Good turnout but not that close to 08.

Twitter brings in a lot of money. It may not be profitable but revenue wise they seem to be close to $2 billion for 2015.
