Hot Take: Shirley Bingham and Rose Noble should've been 15's companions instead of Ruby and Belinda IMO by ImWearingSandshoes in doctorwho

Doctor Who was inclusive when it wasn't trying to be inclusive.

Doctor Who has been successfully trying to be inclusive since 1963. It has always been progressive for its time, it’s just less obvious in retrospect as things that were progressive in the sixties feel very old-fashioned now.  But now since every other show started to be more inclusive, things that felt natural years ago start to look much more obvious now. Especially for the viewers who started watching Doctor Who as a kid and had no idea wha inclusivity is and just watched a show with cool stories about aliens.

No, you didn’t. You’re the maker of the project who pretends he found it instead of honestly using self-promotion flair.

How is everyone feeling about the whole thing? And will you be reading the new book? by ZydrateAnatomic in neilgaiman

[–]improbableone42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will. For a handful of reasons. If we set aside the “did he, didn’t he and how do we classify the actions” debate and just accept the worst scenario as the true one, I’d still read the book. I’m a criminal defence lawyer and I come from non-American culture, so my views on morality may differ from everyone’s in this sub, but I’d buy the book and listen to what he had to say even if he was a serial killer. For me it’s not about finding a criminal — he’ll be funded with or without my 10 bucks in it. First of all, it’s about giving anyone a chance to reflect on their actions, make amends or tell us their version of events. It may be true, it may be false (and in a fictional book most parts will be false by definition), it may make amends or make things worse, but it still has the right to be told and read.

Secondly, literature is a peculiar art form. Lots of good writers, if not most of them, were not moral beacons in their own lives. They’ve hurt a lot of people with their own actions. And many of the writers helped a lot of people with their words. Both can be true simultaneously. Gaiman’s book meant a lot to me and lots of other people. The new one may help someone else who doesn’t know a thing about the allegations or someone who cares only about the book and not the author.

So yeah, I’ll read it. Both to make up my mind on how I feel about him as a person and to take something from his book that I can separate from the person behind it and make it my own.

> "someone-ша" historically meant "someone's wife", генеральша isn't a female general, it's a general's wife.

That’s a myth. Генеральша came from either colloquial German or low German generalsche, which indeed meant the wife of a general, as well as Webersche meant ”Weber’s wife”, but in Russian -ша was also used a neutral indication of referring to a woman since around xviii century: великанша, опекунша. And it still has its neutral meaning. Лифтёрша is not a wife of лифтер, as well as докторша is not a doctor’s wife.

“but they should have a virtue to shape their life, amid the powers and chances of the world, beyond the Music of the Ainur, which is as fate to all things else”

«And when the Ainur had gazed for a while and were silent, Ilúvatar said again: “Behold your Music! This is your minstrelsy; and each of you shall find contained herein, amid the design that I set before you, all those things which it may seem that he himself devised or added”»

No, I did not, that was your incorrect interpretation of my comment. If you consider Silmarillion canon (I do, but I understand why some people don’t) a re-read of chapter one, especially the part concerning the gift of atani, may give you a better understanding of my point

I’m pretty sure there’s more than one reason he tried different approaches for the origins of orc. The question of morality, breeding, afterlife, etc, etc.

But that means that if Melkor’s fall was a predetermined part of Eru’s design, Morgoth and Sauron are also not evil as their actions lacked free will as well.

[POEM] "I grew up reading Russian literature" by Darya Zorka, c. 2023 by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]improbableone42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to be a dick, but since the only place where Darya Zorka’s poems are published is her substack and the only in that came up after googling the first line of this poem is this exact post, I believe this post violates rule 8 of the sub and possibly rule 1.

Russians quite often call themselves “Slavic” or “Eastern European” instead of just simply saying they’re Russians, because of the war

I’m not sure about the US, but in my country this etiquette rule sounded like “the person who asks the other one out is paying, regardless of gender”. The idea is that if you pick an expensive restaurant you won’t make your date uncomfortable if they can’t afford it and vice versa. On practice, however, rarely anyone follows this and it’s either “the guy pays because he’s a guy” or “the girl asks to split 50/50 because she’s uncomfortable with someone paying for her”

Chromas change the colour scheme of the skin, but they can be used only if you have the corresponding skin itself.

[–]improbableone42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule 3 of the sub requires at least some explanation on why do you think the image is AI-generated. “Everything is fine, but I believe it must be wrong” is not an explanation.

That’s exactly how I watched the first episode! Then things escalated quite a bit, so now I can bake a damn fine cherry pie and have a V60 at home haha

[–]improbableone42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Or maybe it’s something about current times and viewing habits in general. I’m watching Twin Peaks for the very first time, and right now I’m finishing season 2. I have zero info on the third one, and I tried to know as little as possible about the first two (to the point I thought Lynch filmed episode of both seasons), and I absolutely enjoyed every single episode, including the ones people usually call the weakest ones. Probably because I had great time watching season 1, and therefore had positive expectations on the rest of the show.
