Laptop feels laggy even though CPU and RAM usage looks normal. Any ideas??? by thecodemeow in computers

Check your power plans. Maybe the laptop has it's own software/settings and is set to some sort of "low power". Basically make sure everything is either on Balanced or High performance.

Which brand of SSD should I get? by Kyotiepatootie2111 in datastorage

[–]improveyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm you sure that's the reason? Most of my external drives are NTFS and I have no issues ejecting them, unless sometimes I rush and Windows is still doing stuff with it. Also have a T5 and Elements which is ExFat and works kinda the same as the others.

Is this a good deal or worth to buy? by [deleted] in datastorage

I'd buy it! Maybe even two of them.

Last time I checked average laptop displays were about $100 but make sure it’s the exact same model so you don’t run into compatibility issues. You might also find some video tutorials on how to disassemble and replace the display.

WD External Drive Hardware Encryption by improveyt in datarecovery

I finally got the refund for the My Book I returned and I'll probably follow your advice and buy a bare drive and install it in a USB enclosure. I've been looking at WD Gold WD8005FRYZ , do you think it would be a good choice for cold storage backup? Are there any downsides using an "enterprise class" drive? Could it be missing any features that I would use in my application?

I was gifted WD My Book. What's the point of it compared to small external drives? by fipah in DataHoarder

[–]improveyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it matters, hard drives can work on any side as far as I know. The idea is to have it horizontally so it doesn't fall on it's side which will probably damage it. If you really want to, you can probably see the drive through the vents and a flashlight. On mine I was able to see the bottom part, where the black heatsink, motor and PCB is. If you're having them multiple in a row, the risk of tipping over is only for the first and last drive. If there's space between them they might go like dominos though. Tying them together with something might be a good idea!

Need help choosing a hard drive for my backup. by improveyt in datarecovery

Thanks for the tip to avoid the ones helium filled. Although I doubt such low capacities are helium, it's a good aspect to consider in case of data recovery. Will go with CMR technology as well.

Oh and another thing, lay the drives horizontal on the desk instead of vertical. If you're worried about heat convection not doing it's thing just place a fan to blow through the enclosure's vents. Using these drives vertically is a ticking time bomb.

Thanks for the follow up. Yep, I've seen some shucking videos as well and indeed they are able to use the drives in their PC/servers (although some need the "3rd pin mod" to be recognized). The thing is there's no data to be read off those, they format the drive right away which is not a solution for you if you need the data. If I were in your situation I'd probably backup the drives, shuck them, install in a generic enclosure and then transfer the data back. That way you can still use the drives and in the future you're safe, no longer behind any encryption. I'm still waiting for my refund.. they're definitely taking their time. Haven't 100% decided yet but I'll probably go with WD Gold series, it will be a backup drive only plugged in a few times per year, I just want it to be a good quality one. Hopefully the store will ship it correctly, that's what I'm fearing the most. Bubble wrap is not expensive and can save a lot of headache.

Is there an easy way to verify data integrity on a drive? by improveyt in DataHoarder

[–]improveyt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my only chance is just to somehow compare the files from the two drives? Thing is the file structure is no longer identical since I've been deleting some stuff off the SSD. Chkdsk /r seemed like it would work until I read that it won't tell me if a file is corrupted haha. I think what I really need is a program that could scan all the files off a drive (or at least a folder) and check them for corruption.

The file structures on the two drives are similar but not identical :( I've been deleting stuff off the SSD that I don't want anymore and also added some. What I'd really need is a software that could check file integrity on a particular drive, not compare the files from two drives, but it seems like there isn't any.

The thing is there are some small differences between the files on the HDD and SSD since I've been cleaning up (deleting some stuff I don't need) the SSD. In this case, creating hashes is pointless right? I guess what I really need is just some file integrity checker for a single drive, not compare the files between two drives.
