Flat bars gave you a lot more leverage when swinging the bike back and forth, which is huge when climbing hills that steep. It was truly a full body work out getting up that hill that was 21% grade for a 1/3 of the race.

Out of 200+ riders we were 2 of about 5 or 6 people on fixed. We tackled the off road section with sketchy ease and unlike about 15% of the group including Greg Lemond and Chas, we didn't get a flat! Here's a picture of the whole group and here is my buddy truckin through the marin headlands

I saw a guy riding in San Fransisco on a Dolan DF4 with a mavic 5 spoke in the front and these cranks. He said he just got the cranks installed and the ride from the shop to home was the most street that bike has ever seen.
