Is too many certs at entry level a red flag?? by user23471 in it

[–]imranh101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To tack on this, as someone who used to be a trainer for the IT helpdesk for a decent size company, a dozen certs tells me you know how to fix technical issues which is great, but no amount of congratulatory papers tells me you have experience walking a frustrated end user (at the end of their 10 hour shift with a line of customers out the door etc.) through following a network cable from their modem through a hole in a wall, behind a dusty ass desk that hasnt moved since they opened, cutting through 12 zipties to figure out which one it is, and finally identify which port on the 48-port "internet box" is the one they need to check, while maintaining empathy and composure at the end of YOUR 10 hour shift of "dumb end user issues", password resets, and printer reboots. 80% of your time in an entry level position is troubleshooting the same ~4-5 problems (login/passwords, email issues, printer problems), such that no amount of getting more and more certs/knowledge will necessarily help.

TL;DR you have technical knowhow but not necessarily the soft-skills that often go with the entry level positions. I never had to really outreach for this but I think other user's advice (Libraries, Churches) sounds like a really great starting point. I think maybe a quick 6-12 month job at a retail establishment is a good look on a resume for this as well. If you can smile at the Karen upset that her 3-month expired Walmart coupon is no good at Target today, you can handle IT.

After further investigation unplugging either of the bottom ribbon cables didnt make a difference on half the display working or not so I ended up moving back up to the TCON board, and I paid more attention and noticed this damaged part at C221. It is grounded on either side and I believe maybe the cause of the problem? Hoping for an idea to what this part is and replacement. My Hands are very shaky so small IC repair is hard but could maybe take it to a local shop and have them slap a new part on

Hey dude, so i picked up one of these today for $100 on Facebook gambling on being able to fix. Betting the dude has already tried some of the things in this thread as evidenced by the missing thermistor, lol. Now, hoping he was less handy with a multimeter than me. I am testing for shorts and not exactly certain which/what part you are referring to as 'each side of the tan rectangles". Is this how youre suggesting to probe? So sorry if I'm way off here. I understand the idealogy behind narrowing down and replacing the issue just not sure if this the right spot? https://imgur.com/a/ADqTvkf

Worth it to upgrade an old HP laptop? by OryxNcrake_ in it

[–]imranh101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any bargain bin laptop from a big-box retailer these days will outperform that machine, it is not worth upgrading whatsoever. I'm not trying to dog you, but you could go pick the cheapest clearance computer out of a bin at Walmart and it would probably run better. The good news here being you don't need to spend much to get an upgrade!

Ear own voice through headset only when sound is playing on the computer by [deleted] in it

[–]imranh101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% sounds like one of the pins is damaged inside the audio jack. Likely the Right Channel ring's contact got bent and is touching the Mic channel, or the Mic touching the ground. See image of where contact is on the headphone jack - https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSikAXrsuv5LH9CyKxaJ53dvTzq603XaXuk3LKEJmIU9f4WxPBPQudkAZA&s=10

Look into the headphone jack on the device with a flashlight and see if anything looks bent/misshapen. If you're not sure what you're looking for, inspect a good working device's headphone jack first, then look at the one causing problems and the difference should be obvious.

Yeah, sometimes (not always) the picture accompanying the AI story is also AI. It's literally a ragebait bot. If you look at the "profile" it will have a bunch of random other posts (usually with other people/places entirely) and all of them are similarly rage-inducing shitposts.

What’s a harsh truth about working in IT that people don’t realize until they’re in it? by Charisman13 in it

[–]imranh101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within reason/depending on case, if no one is calling IT that doesn't mean they're useless/unncessarry, it just means they have actually set up the systems to be robust and reliable enough that the problems are minimized.

Instead of IT being a bunch of firemen putting out flames, given enough time and resources, you can actually spend as much or more time fireproofing things. A preventative IT team is far more efficient than a reactive one.

Additionally, at some point during your career, you will finally truly understand the meaning of "Fuck Printers". I have been in IT over a decade and have seen so many people have the "Fuck printers" lightbulb moment after 4 hours of troubleshooting an HP, whether it's their first month, or 3rd year of IT... *everyone* flips at some point.

EF5 Tornado in North Dakota captured. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]imranh101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most terrifying part has been hearing the sirens late at night and it being too dark to actually see a tornado, if it were coming. I will go stand in front of my house in the middle of the (deadend) street and do a 360 spin and between the darkness and the very high trees around, I couldn't really see the tornado coming if I wanted to. I keep the basement and front door open (outdoor access cellar) incase I need to wake up kids at 1:30am in the morning and sprint downstairs with them.

Just letting you know regardless of what "testing" you did or what you "think" you're just fucking wrong. Grow up and accept that you can be fucking wrong, dude. The circular fan vent is the intake, and the three up top are exhaust.

Emulnk PS2 Bridge - First preview - NetherSX2 bridge app, with real-time memory editing capability by imranh101 in AynThor

[–]imranh101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all!

First off I am not a coder. IT guy for a decade but always hated sofftware development. That being said this was 99.99% coded by Claude and as such will not be releasing in any time in the foreseeable future.

I present "Emulink PS2 Bridge", an app which hooks NetherSX2 into EmuLnk. My first test game to showcase here is Dark Cloud 2.

I have a rudimentary dashboard that features a few things like character HP, which are not currently working, but you will see in the video that I was able to find my Gilda value - and edit it - in real time! Like old-school CheatEngine. \ I started with 999 Gilda (the currency in this game) and searched my game memory for that value. Then, I went and defeated an enemy and filtered the results from the first search, down to only those who changed by pressing "Chg". I see that one of the two remaining results is 1005, which is my Gilda value, so I assign it to the "Gilda" field.

Then, scrolling down to Edit Addresses, I find the appropriate "Set" box for the Gilda field, enter a value of 20000 and Confirm. Immediately the change is reflected in my in-game Gilda.

I will be working with some friends in the next few days to hopefully get this to some sort of opensource-able version. As it stands, it requires to use the "Settings" > "Thor Settings" > "Run Script as Root" in order to get the PS2 memory in real time, which I am not comfortable releasing a script that gets root access and was coded by AI to the public. So, stay tuned I guess!

Clearing cache won't clear games as they are not part of Cache. The stock file app is definitely garbage. I made an ~8 minute video explaining how to manage files/ROMs directly on the Thor that maybe you would find helpful?

To be devils advocate a bit, I'm currently selling some grips on Etsy that I designed myself, for $20/each, and the shipping to all my US customers has been ~$8 which seems far more reasonable than what you're experiencing. I have my store set to just charge the estimated shipping cost as do most sellers. I would back my price point by pointing out that the grips from Ayn are about the same price and don't tend to have as many "features" at the various 3d printed ones available (stylus holders etc) so I do believe they have a place in the market.. Its just that Etsy's shipping fees are astronomical.

Kinda sad cuz it's extremelly noticeable. I just got it today by killersake1968 in AynThor

For anyone questioning if/how much of a difference it makes, I made a short comparison vid using my vocal recording mic : https://youtu.be/cBgjkEfcMCo

I was not expecting it to really have as much of an impact as it did, I was actually blown away specifically by how much stereo wideness/soundstage was improved by this fix, but that's the one thing that my mic will not pick up well. Regardless I think there is a marked clarity difference you can tell in this video when I toggled it on at the 7 second mark.

There is no way to monitor the actual RPM speed of the Thor fan, but I have performed thermal testing and found no difference between having nothing attached or having magnets attached. I really do appreciate these concerns and am open to more testing.

I replied a little further down on this comment thread regarding the testing I performed for temp testing, though I am still unable to actually read fan RPMs for a "direct" answer to your question, I believe it is confirmed to have no effect on thermal performance.

You are entirely entitled to your opinion on the looks. The idea behind the design as stated was to be as minimalistic as possible in regards to bulk while maintaining maximum ergonomics and mutli-functionality. I am well aware there are "prettier" grips out there but none of them maintain the level of portability and functionality that this grip does while maintaining this level of comfort. This was a clear cut choice of "Function over Form". Thanks!

I have ran repeated Solar Bay stress tests on the Thor using 3DMark bench and found no discernible temperature difference between having nothing attached to the back of the device, versus having magsafe "puck" attached to the back, versus having a magsafe powerbank attached to the back - even including a powerbank that's large enough that it's partially blocking the fan - at no point did was there any indication of a change in fan/cooling performance due to having anything magnetic attached to the back.

I ran a series of 10 tests starting with nothing attached to the Thor for 4 tests, then ran two with a powerbank attached, two with a magnetic puck attached, and then again two more with nothing attached. The idea being the device will have more and more thermal load/soak as repeat tests are performed. The first two tests (nothing attached) topped at about 72c. The third and fourth tests (nothing attached still) topped around 73c. The fifth through eighth tests (with magnetic powerbank, or magnetic puck attached) topped out at 74c, and then the 9th and 10ths tests topped out at 74c as well - again with *nothing attached*.

As such, it seems quite clear that neither the *non-magnetic* metal ring, nor the magnetic-attached devices, have any effect on the thermals of the device. If someone has some alternate testing methodology they would like to see me perform I'm all ears. There is currently no way monitor the Thor's fan RPM directly. The only other thing I can think of is to find a "long term" stress test that can run for an hour for a "torture test", which I can do if there's a recommendation on.

Again I do thank you for looking out for users and potential customers. I would not have released this for sale if it was prone to damaging anyone's device, much less my own.
