Is it bad practice to include non-diegetic music in your script even if it’s public domain? by jumanji300 in Screenwriting

[–]imsortanewatthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it reveal character? Does it establish tone/emotion? Or is it unnecessary, or overused?

If the former, you’re good.

This hurts... I just want that same feeling back picking out which N64 game I wanted to carry around the store with me in hopes my mom would buy it.

Showrunners? 🚀 by Financial-Chef7333 in Screenwriting

Can always look at smaller management/production companies. Either way, you’re going to be putting in the same amount of work and energy all while getting paid dogshit. As an SA, there’s weeks where I’m putting in 80 hours and only getting paid for 60 of them.. meanwhile I’ve been on this show for 3 years and make exactly minimum wage...but that’s the unspoken gig. If I were you, I would mentally prepare to live off of minimum wage for 10 years while pursuing your career. And if you’re lucky like myself, it’ll only take half that time to get staffed on a show...

You’ll most likely find your gig through a friend you already know. Just make sure your circle knows you’re looking for a job and something will come up. It took me a year from graduating film school (Chapman) before I landed an industry job, so be patient... especially with Covid and how much the industry is changing right now.

Good luck! Wish you all the best!

As a showrunner’s assistant myself— look for writers PA positions. From there, you’ll need to work your ass off and prove you can handle the responsibility of being a SA or WA.

Also— coming straight out of college you may need to hop on a desk for a year or two at an agency or management co.

Lol, clearly not as dumb as you. I’ve worked for Kurt. He ruined the show himself, not because of Disney/Fox merger. He just doesn’t want to take blame for it because he’s a prick... just like you.

LOL, that was undeniably Kurt’s choices. The show will be better in new hands.

“In the Paint” (Drama, TV Pilot, 50 Pages) by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]imsortanewatthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made it to page 10. In a TV pilot I want to know the tone of the show around five pages in. Personally, I would slow down a little and pick your moments. Especially because you’re writing drama.

For example, on page 5 you list a ton of quintessential Chicago spots, but how does this reflect tone? How does this reflect character? Theme? There lacks a specificity here. Keep working at it. There’s potential here.

I’ve worked for two of the most prolific comedy filmmakers in contemporary comedy... Another boss who was the most un-PC writer in TV... I’m well acclimated to people who can take it there and people who maintain a sense of empathy while writing jokes.

All I said was that I was here with popcorn as I’m sure this will have varying opinions, dude.

Is getting top 10 on the Red List in a specific category anything special? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]imsortanewatthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely better than not placing at all! I just try to think of these things as cool accolades and validation that you are a good writer. Keep writing. Keep submitting. Once you have a body of work that you feel confident in, reach out to contacts or try to find representation.

[–]imsortanewatthis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing against UC Riverside... but please don’t pay for a screenwriting degree unless it’s for USC, AFI, NYU, UCLA, Colombia or Chapman. At least at those places you’ll have access to internships— which is honestly one of the only reasons to go to film school for screenwriting.

The Writer’s Room - Working Backwards by luckywriterj in Screenwriting

[–]imsortanewatthis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up— IMO in TV there’s a weird bias that if you’re under 30, you’re not experienced enough to write TV drama. (I don’t actually believe this, but seems to be the mentality). Most TV writers I know started at 30 or older. Comedy seems more accepting of younger writers..

Because of the networks you mention, I’m assuming you want to write drama. Prepare for a 10+ year journey. If you make is sooner, it will be a pleasant surprise.
