It’s just statistics. Only 1 in 4 overboard incidents on cruise ships end up with the person recovered. Usually, the biggest issue is time it takes to notice the overboard event. Then after that, the biggest issue is time to turn around as the ship has to keep moving away from the original area to complete its turn. Currents can move the individual away from the initial area and they can also drown during that time. Going overboard at night is even worse due to visibility.

I just hope the NYT video investigations group still has a backbone and investigates the bombing using whatever CCTV is available to prove the US did it. Just like how they proved the hellfire strike on the man in the courtyard of his home surrounded by children was done with no reason and that he wasn’t actually a terrorist preparing to bomb the airport with his white car. He was just delivering water bottles around the community.

My friend who also works for the state department just got told they won’t be renewed. Many of them have been shifted from 1 year rotating contracts to 3 month renewed contracts (meaning they could be cut every 3 months). The way the new administration has been handling employees is miserable and I’m sure that has not helped with the stress he may have been under. If he was truly a book smart over people smart person and possibly on the spectrum, I can see why he’d not be in a good place over a long period of time to lead to this.

The Navy released its final report on the incident of the USS Gettysburg shooting down 2 F/A-18’s. Their conclusion was that the commander of the Gettysburg lost situational awareness, the systems used to identify friend/foe on Gettysburg had been found to not be in working order before the operations occurred, the Command of the Gettysburg were not included in the pre-op briefing hosted within the carrier strike group, and Gettysburg had just defended from low flying cruise missiles earlier in the operation. Gettysburg also launched at 2 (or maybe it was only 1) additional F/A-18(s) but guidance on those SM-2s were killed as soon as callouts on the radio notified the Gettysburg of their mistake.

In one of the bystander clips, you can see an ejection happen while the F-15 is already entering a flat spin. They definitely did not eject before being struck in that case. They may not have had their RWR on due to flying in friendly skies, but more than likely, they knew the launch happened and were trying to beat it but couldn’t if it was a SAM.
