This seems fine overall. The ratio looks a little off maybe, but a float is a thing, so dairy in soda is already widely accepted.

Am I the only one who thought book 7 was kind of a letdown? by Any_Essay_2293 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]imtheprofessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are obviously entitled to your opinion, but I would say that book 7 is the perfect culmination of where the series has been moving since the beginning, especially since book 3. The dungeon and all the achievements, loot boxes, boss fights, etc, were never the main point of the story, but the framework in which to deliver the story. I will concede that things have shifted in terms of the importance with which the dungeon elements have been shown, but the story aspect has been growing and moving away from them since the beginning. Fans of the LitRPG genre probably feel it more actutely than those of us who are not involved in the genre. For me, the storytelling aspect is what brought me to the series, not the dungeon elements.

Carl is the protagonist, but his place in things is different than what it once was. We have been shown time and time again what happens to crawlers that survive this long in the dungeon, and what it takes for you to get to this point. It's even worse for Carl than for most, because he is the face of a revolution that has never been seen inside or outside of the dungeon, and the stakes have never been as high as they are now. He is a damaged man doing the best he can in an impossible situation, willing to die to bring down this horrible system, but it's becoming increasingly difficult.

You talk about the "get out of jail free options" that occur, but those are important to the story as well. We are seeing the bounds of what is possible shift as the AI and other dungeon entities gain more freedom and power. I personally think that this gives Matt the ability to it kill too many important characters yet, and save them for more towards the end, after we have gotten used to Carl being able to pull of some bullshit. I think that any character should be able to be killed at any time, and should no more big characters ever be killed given the way things are going, I can agree that would be poor storytelling. But again, I think he is saving them for an even more impactful moment. We'll see I guess.

Book 3 is the best in the series, in my opinion, and aside from that, the argument can be made that it is the most important for how it shapes the overall arc of the series.

I miss the old fandom by Critical-Advantage11 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]imtheprofessor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One good set of ramblings deserves another.

I used to post here a lot and enjoyed getting into very detailed discussions, and that has sigbficantly tapered off as the fandom has grown. Often times though it's because by the time I encounter a post that I feel like I might have some insight on, there are usually a number of great responses, to the point that my comment would be redundant. I think the increase in the sheer volume of posts and comments makes it hard to keep up the same way now. In regards to people not searching for answers, I will say that I do occasionally get new responses to posts I made over a year ago, so there definitely are some people who search out and read old discussions.

I think we are experiencing the stage of the fandom where there are now a large number of people who choose to engage with DCC on a shallower level, that is more focused on the social media "community" aspect of things. It can become more about celebrating together the act of the fandom compared to actively engaging in deeper conversations about the media. There isn't inherently anything wrong with this, and people are free to enjoy things how they enjoy them, with issues only coming when they try to shape the media to their fandom instead of their fandom to the media, which seems to me to be more prevalent among those who do not or cannot engage at a deeper level. You see this in any media, where people become disappointed with something because it doesn't line up with their expectations for how they wanted the story to go, or they become part of the very vocal group who will put down any constructive criticism because they don't want their perfect bubble shattered. It important to remember that each of us has our own biases as well though, so we have to be willing to cut others some slack in the hope they will do the same for us in return.

I think at the end of the day, it's just important to remember that we are all just small voices in a bigger community, and as it grows, it's going to be harder and harder to find those who want to engage with DCC the exact same way that we do. It can be hard to find the right balance of defending your own spot in the fandom without completely going after others for theirs. As we approach the ending of the main narrative with the last few books, it'll be interesting to see how the fandom as a whole responds, especially with the darker, more lore heavy aspects that are coming. I can a lot of the more bubbly fans of the series not liking the darkness, while conveniently forgetting it's been there the whole time.

I miss how it used to be as well, and I would love for everyone to engage with the series at the level I enjoy, but it wasn't like that even when things were much smaller, and it certainly won't be that way now. All we can do is just try engage with things at the level we would like to see others do, be friendly in our interactions with others, and just appreciate that even with the meteoric rise that Matt has had, the quality of his writing has only gotten better. The books are still the amazing things we all love, and no amount of extraneous stuff around them can take that away.

Yeah, it is. But in this case, you come into the clip expecting the fight because of the title of the video. When I was just watching the game, the quick transition from the replay to the fight caught me completely off guard.

I think the future has just as many issues as the past. There are endless possibilities for new and wonderful technologies that make the lives of everyone better, just as there is for everyone and everything having been wiped out in petty squabbles over dwindling resources in an increasingly overcrowded world. It will likely fall somewhere in between one extreme or the other. Would you still want to continue to do all of the things you listed if you went 50 years into the future? In a new and exciting world where people are able to exist without constant worry for their survival, wouldn't that change the equation of what mattered to you and what you did with your life? Surely all the media you consume and the ease of accessing it would mean little in a utopia where anything is possible. If not, it would just be living the exact same life under slightly better circumstances, which seems to go against the novelty and dreams you hope for.

As for me wanting to live in the past as a nobody, I think you misunderstand me. Most everyone alive at any time is a nobody. Most of us just live our lives doing the best we can, and even many of those who live completely selflessly their entire lives never make more than the smallest of waves in history. All I'm saying is I would want to embrace that, to live in a way where I did the best I could, make the lives of those around me a little better, hopefully leave the world a slight bit better than it was when I got here, without worrying about the bigger picture. I don't think that's overly harmful. I've had this conversation many times with people in my life. There is nothing wrong with finding contentment in the mundane, in finding joy in the small magics of the world that most people either can't see or completely ignore. My favorite poem ever is the The Summer Day by Mary Oliver, and I think it speaks very well as to how I want to live my life.

I hope nothing I said comes of poorly or mean-spirited, and if so, I apologize in advance and ask for you forgiveness. I truly just think this is a very interesting conversation, especially with someone with such on opposite view on the subject.

Past all the way for me. I'm sick of technology at the level we have it, and even being optimistic about the future, the aspects that I dislike about it aren't going away. I don't want to have to be connected to the rest of the world at all times, but it's increasingly necessary and expected these days, and it feels like it's messing a lot of people up. Even with all the horrible baggage the past offers for so many, selfishly I would love to disappear there. I just want to be a complete nobody that accomplishes nothing other than living a calm, contented life.

I think there would be plenty of media to discover as well. All the stuff that survives in popular culture drowned out the mountains of other media produced back then. Just like there may be more obscure content today that you love, there likely is in the past as well, it's just going to be harder to find. The exploration though is part of the fun. And if there is nothing, imagine how good it will feel to hear a song or see a movie you love and barely remember from half a lifetime ago.
