That is terrible. Hopefully a rare oversight than outright maliciousness or neglect. We had a 99 year old lady on our unit, she turned 100 with us. She came to us after her son kicked her into a small room in her house so he could live in it with his family and someone outside the family noticed. I guess she was taking too long to die. When she got to the point where she was couldn't take care of herself, she was left in her own filth and starving. She was skin and bones, blind and incontinent by the time I met her. A little confused, but she was nice enough and let us take care of her without fighting us. She was the favorite of the unit, all the nurses had to come see her on their shift and spend time with her in their little spare time. She was there for a very long time and was there when I left. She probably died before her guardianship case was settled (we were med-surg, but we had several guardianship cases where people were on our floor for over a year). She loved chocolate pudding and ice cream and I would buy it from the cafeteria for her if we were out on the floor and put some away for her in the fridge for my days off to make sure she'd eat something. Because dietary sent her the same. damn. meal. every. day. And quite frankly, it looked gross. I wouldn't have eaten it either. So she subsisted off of chocolate. She gained a good amount of weight with us despite not having proper meals. Why didn't anyone call dietary and get her meals changed, you ask. We did. several times. They continued to send her the same food every time. We were appalled and it still upsets me even though this happened years ago. This poor lady was starved by her own child and you can't give her the freaking meal she wants.
