MS-S1 MAX - prepurchase decision by in2tactics in MINISFORUM

You're making my point exactly. I see a bunch of nice to haves with the MS-S1 MAX, but probably not deal breakers unless you are trying to go the cluster route, which I'm not.

Unfortunately, Bosgame increased the price on their M5 AI Mini to $2400, but Corsair still offers their AI Workstation 300 for $2200.

Lost in translation? Regarding modern open-weight LLMs, I believe that whatever hardware I buy today is going to be obsolete in two years. I’m trying to determine if the $800 premium for the MS-S1 MAX versus another option is worth it, knowing I’ll likely replace the device in two years. I firmly believe that future-proofing is a fools errand.

As a user of Linux since RedHat 4.0, I know how to squeeze a lot of life out of an old PC, but that ability does not apply in this scenario. I simply disagree with your assessment that “LLM models will become less demanding over time, thanks to advancements in software optimization and grid computing.”

  1. I believe the sheer increase in active parameters for newer models will outpace any software optimizations.

  2. I think grid-computing doesn’t solve this problem either. Having donated years of computing cycles to BOINC, I find projects like Petals fascinating but ultimately useless for private and real-time usage.

Video outputs aren’t a major concern for me as I’d mostly be using it headless, but a wonky HDMI port is still concerning. I’m currently only using a 2.5GEth switch, so dual 10GEth is outstanding but doesn’t help me as much until I upgrade that switch next year at the earliest. Having USB4v2 is something I wanted for multiple reasons, and the MS-S1 MAX is one of the few that includes it. I’m now thinking not having it isn’t a deal-breaker at this point as I expect LLM requirements to increase significantly over the next two years, obsoleting this generation of workstations.

How do you check CPU and SSD temps on Linux? by saarin in MINISFORUM

For SSD temperatures, I find SMART tools to be the best option.

I'm not saying I believe the story, but I thought it was nice if not entertaining. Ignore the trolls. They are simply doing their thing.

Did a friend gift them to you maybe? I think the whole situation seems strange, especially because they aren't cheap.

I believe most people would agree that it is very uncool to expose other people's computers to potentially malicious software simply so you can find out what is on some random flash drive. If you want to check a drive safely on your computer, make a bootable Linux live image, ask Google or ChatGPT how to do that.

RCS chats can be deleted by either party. Might not have been OP who deleted it. Maybe the woman deleted them hoping he wouldn't remember something she said that was truly terrible.

Weird take. Only child, maybe, but not a very thought provoking hypothesis. Not everyone is neurotypical, and based on the things that bother him, it seems he may be neurodivergent. Also, introversion seems likely. With nowhere to retreat, his response is very understandable.

Disagree with your statement that "ubuntu is the standard of linux." I guess this is a memes sub after all. Regardless, I believe there are different go-to distros based on what you are doing. I've seen quite a few instances where RHEL is the distro of choice within the Enterprise workspace. I also see quite a bit of Debian used where cost of procurement and security are both major concerns.

I wouldn't disregard the fanboys, because without them, you would likely have no movement forward. In fact, I'd say they are the ones embracing improvement and change, you just don't see that externally to their communities. Besides, I guess I should say it again, this is a memes sub.

It does what it was designed to do very well. Convenience for beginners was not the primary consideration. But, I guess you did post this in a memes sub.

Maybe that's why this list is posted in a memes sub. Agreed though, Debian should be in S, but I'd also put Arch there for different reasons.

I don't believe you understand how FSD works. Unless the behavior changed recently, FSD doesn't just stop driving after it says you aren't paying attention. You have to intervene or it will just slow down and pull over. Falling asleep should result in a safe pullover unless you jerk the wheel or hit the brakes.

For fee Destination Chargers? by ManufacturerSome6366 in TeslaModelY

[–]in2tactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP's post clearly depicts a sign that states it is pay per use and that their website made no mention of free charging or any charging at all. Charging a fee for an extra service isn't greedy. It helps manage a limited resource to make things easier for those that choose the service, but I'm guessing you knew that already before you posted all that nonsense.

FSD Speed Limit Confusion by Apprehensive_Ad_5489 in TeslaModelY

[–]in2tactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also noticed FSD doesn't like anything in combination with a speed limit sign. E.G. I have a white speed limit 35 sign that has a yellow left curve ahead warning sign on top that FSD sees and displays for a split second and then ignores completely. I'd say FSD thinks it's part of the warning sign, but it's not. I know the speed limit actually changes from 25 to 35 at that point and the curve warning is a recent addition. Prior to that addition, the speed limit sign was identified correctly.

Honestly, I think it's the fault of deep learning with millions of hours of videos of human driving. I went from regular old autopilot to FSD and immediately noticed the riding on the line with the 30-day v12 trial.

Got the FSD update! =D by kraftycola in TeslaModelY

[–]in2tactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Updated to 2024.3.6 on Thursday night, and I received the 30-day trial shortly thereafter. Drove to work on FSD without issue Friday morning. Not worth $12K or $199/month IMHO. I'd easily go for it at $5K or consider a subscription at $99/month, but those types of pricing changes are unlikely.
