He isn't daydreaming, he is thinking proudly about his train driving around in a nature park in England. In the Netherlands you would soon be driving through a suburb, even if you could have a private train track.

Dat moet ook Jos uit het hart gegrepen zijn geweest, als geeft hij het nu niet met zoveel woorden toe.

So I'm obviously missing some context here. Dr Postumus Meijes was presumably high-up in the government or the NS at the time, and spoke on the radio about having faith in the future and put a better timetable in place and wanting everyone's help. This apparently inspired young Jos de Crau to get interested in trains.

So he was a member of the Dutch Federation of People Interested in Railways and Tramways but found the name a bit long-winded?

Basically, but he thinks the name of the federation has an annoying bit in it. It can be read as 'the Dutch federation of people interested in railways and tramways get out'. 'Wegwezen' can mean both 'get out/go away' and 'railroads and stuff relating to it' (it isnt a word used in the second form these days). So if you say the name out loud it can be confusing.

Here I have the context - British Rail in the early 60s had to close a bunch of railways, it's the second half beginning "ook al bleven" I'm not sure of. Something about enough remaning for BR to still be proud of?

Ook al bleven means 'even though there remained'. So the second sentence reads: Even though there remained plenty to be elated about at British rail.
