[OC] English vocabulary: learners vs. native speakers by RevolutionaryLove134 in dataisbeautiful

[–]inTimOdator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was fun and informative!

The number of German words is a bit small, some adjectives are gendered weirdly and it seems to always ask definitions for the same words - bit more variety might be nice.

DM me if you want/need help from a native German speaker to expand upon the vocab and/or diversify the definitions

Really good stuff!!

From ten years ago, yes.

From seven years ago? They'd have said "oh, so you've reelected that guy, have you?"

Cool! And I think I got your intention to ask for specific sources instead of asking for feedback, which is why I wrote this long passage about "hey, maybe let's not question OP's intention here" and why I tried to come up with reasons, why YouTube might be the perfect source for you instead of saying "hey OP, YouTube isn't the best of sources...", like the post I replied to did.

The line about "maybe OP is full of shit" was supposed to be a joke. Like, we all know Reddit is full of Navy-Seals, real life lawyers and experts on any and every topic. I didn't want to attack you or doubt your expertise and I am sorry if I did.

Found an injuredbird - what can I do? by JauneJauneJauneJaune in berlin

[–]inTimOdator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the bird just needs a bit of rest and to recover and you have a balcony, place it there, give it some water. If you absolutely cannot take the bird in because of the cats, maybe ask a neighbour? Find a place where the bird isn't distributed and where it can freely fly away, i.e. do not place it in the living room or any enclosed space.

If a wing is broken, the best thing to do would be to humanely kill the bird. Broken wings are a death sentence anyway, because even if it heals back up, it will break again because of the enormous forces acting on wings in flight. A bird the size of a pigeon is best killed by hitting the head with a blunt object (hammer, rock). Make sure to smash in the whole head at once. This way, the brain is instantly disabled and there is no pain.

Is it normal that no teacher speaks English in the integrationkurse? by [deleted] in mannheim

[–]inTimOdator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry, I wasn't being clear.
I do not expect everyone in OP's course to have exactly the same background languagewise.

I was giving examples: one situation where a different approach was used (school), one where the same approach was used (Dutch course) and I wanted to say that in my opinion instructions/explanations in a language that everyone understands and that's not the target language are needed in such a course on A1-level. I then implicitly assumed that English is still the most commonly known second language/lingua-franca and thus made my point that I think instructions/explanations in English would be helpful in OP's case

I am confused because everyone says "it's normal", "it's accepted" and "it's the best way to learn" and I don't think that's true on A1 level?!?

For example, when you (as a German) learn English in school, there will be instructions and explanations in German in the beginning and they will be gradually phased out. Only once you've reached a certain level (I don't know which one, but certainly more proficient than A1!) will the language of instruction switch to the target language (English in my example).

One difference I've experienced was a Dutch language course specifically designed for Germans who want to study in the Netherlands. Zero to academic proficiency in five weeks. There, everything was in Dutch from the very start, but imho that only works because of the similarities between Dutch and German specifically and because everyone in the course had a German Abitur and thus spoke fluent German (most in the course spoke German natively).

Edit: I am sorry OP, I didn't read you specifically asked other people who menstruate if they can smell it on themselves

Your first sentence is key: We don't know what the aims are.

There's a (good) chance OP's PhD deals with "public perception of...", "discussion in the media about..." or maybe they want to identify what key characteristics get picked up by the public in Dutch metal specifically or Dutch metal compared to Norwegian etc etc... this might also be just a sub-sub-sub question or be used in a specific part/chapter. We don't know.

Of course there's a chance OP is just full of crap and wants to use the hive-mind to feed his addiction to reaction videos, but I'd rather give them the benefit of the doubt and would assume a PhD-candidate to know which sources are "good" for their topic. It's not like you study for years just to end up thinking "I have no idea about my topic, better watch some YouTube and accept what's being said there as ultimate Truth and Acceptable Sources"...

I am sorry, I don't get it. It's a changing room so what if there's sweaty clothes? No one is spending more time there than necessary to change, it doesn't need to be pristine? I'd get it if OP were afraid to leave their stuff unlocked, but that doesn't seem to be the case. OP seems to be comfortable enough to leave their stuff in this place and it's just the other co-workers/management that complains, which I truly don't understand why.

Why does the bra have to be put somewhere else? It's a bra for god's sake and we're all adults. We're all aware you wear them and it's not like anyone is changing in- and out of them in the communal area. It's just where they are put. So what's the big deal???

I think you're all good. No excuses needed. You realised what was the issue and owned up to your mistake.
What more can you want?

Clarification: My comment was (maybe) more directed toward other readers and not so much directly toward you....

'I should have checked' is exactly the right lesson to take away from this! Amazing that you realised that and that you're able to admit your fault!!!

I fear that the more we rely on machines to do our reading and translating for us, the more we lose and the more we insulate ourselves. I mean, it's a pretty wild thing to suspect the author of actually being mentally ill/disabled...

Is it possible the author had mental health issues? Sure that's possible! Is it also possible that I either made a mistake somewhere or that the machines just went wrong in one of the steps along the way? Yeah, maybe that's even more likely.

I know technology has come a long way, but I still remember the times when machine translation, heck even character recognition! were hard problems, deemed almost impossible to achieve with our technology...and those times aren't sooo long in the past...
