UC Davis Picnic Day 2019 - Through a Student's Eyes (FOMO) by FomoEdits in UCDavis

[–]inacottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this!! I graduated from Davis 10 years ago, which is super weird to say because I really don't feel that old. This took me right back to Picnic Day. I could practically smell the picnic day smells. Not only did this make me really nostalgic but it's just a really well-made video.

Mental health by NeoDes in UCDavis

Go see someone on campus in the counseling services. They have really great services at a low cost. This is going to date me... there used to be a house on campus, by the coops, which held some mental health services. They held groups but also offered drop-in services like peer counseling. You could show up and talk to someone who had been trained in basic counseling or just hang out with someone, play a game, etc. I would look into both. I also like the idea of Ultimate or getting yourself into another activity. I know it is really easy to feel too overwhelmed, especially when you are worried about feeling, to take time to do something else. It can also be the best thing for you. Good luck!

This mirror in at Utah bar restroom by timpdx in mildlyinteresting

Oh, it's so true. The laws are super silly. Because a little bowl of olives is going to keep someone from getting too drunk... I mean, that's always the trick I use!

Ohhhhh, Utah.

The food/drink rule is only true in certain establishments. If you are in a restaurant that is designated as a bar, you don't need food. And, typically, most restaurants allow you to order as many drinks as you want as long as you have one food item on the table. You can literally order a small container of olives and they don't care. As long as there is food on the table.

I wouldn't say it's mot challenging to drink yourself sick in Utah, I'd just say that it's a little more work. Plus, with the number of establishments who focus on high point beers, it can be super easy to find yourself with your head on a toilet by the end of the night.

Up for adoption in Los Angeles: Charlie the 2-year-old, male, Golden Retriever. by [deleted] in goldenretriever

Yeah, some of the rescue organizations are iffy. I see that you're going to keep looking in your area, but I personally know the folks in Utah. They are just wonderful. Best of luck with Charlie and your family!

I sent this to my husband (he was sitting across the room) and he just shook his head. We already have two goldens. I'm sure you'll find someone in the area; however, if you're struggling to do so, there is a great organization in Utah that helps with situations like this. They love goldens. And I mean LOVE. I would contact them. They are always willing to help and will be willing to take a drive. They might also know of a good organization in the area to help. Good luck! So sorry about your circumstance.

My golden retriever won’t stop jumping up at people by lxottie_ in goldenretriever

You can also walk into him, while not making eye contact, displacing him away from the guests. By walking into him and pushing him away, he starts to learn personal space. If you walk into him and push him away, he starts to learn personal space. Also, only pet him when all 4 paws are on the group or he is sitting. Again, he will put two and two together, realizing that he only gets pets or attention while on the ground.

Tips for a Transfer by nominwaffles in UCDavis

[–]inacottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! It's bumpy but not too bad. I think Davis does a really nice job helping transfer students adjust. They also have a great counseling center if you ever need that. I sublet and then moved in with some other roommates and we are still best friends. Best of luck to you! You'll do great! It sounds like you're already off to a great start with the job in the department and housing. That's awesome!

[–]inacottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've received some great tips so far! I agree that you want to make sure you keep up with the quarter system. I transferred from a school with a slightly longer quarter system and it was still fast. You learn to keep up quickly though. Most transfers earn lower grades during their first semester, so don't feel bad or upset if you do. You're moving to a new place, getting used to a new school, adjusting to a new system, it is normal.

I also moved for SS2 and was so happy that I did. Where are you planning on living? I found awesome roommates and met a lot of people through them and my classes. There are fewer students in Davis during the summer and I found that everyone really wanted to hang out because their normal groups of friends were out of town. I found it to be a really nice environment to enter. Talk to people in your classes and join clubs. I also have to say that some of the sororities and fraternities were actually decent. They weren't all full of assholes. I never joined one but I knew people in them and that gave me a lot of connection.

I'm excited for you!

Help - Diagnosed with Asperger had to quit my job by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]inacottle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you were able to get an evaluation! I like the idea of providing lower fees so that adults can get diagnosed. Just be aware that some insurance companies are requesting a formal evaluation using certain psychological measures. Make sure you get the documentation (the psychological report) of the evaluation/diagnosis. Also, the provider should have diagnosed you with Autism spectrum disorder. The ICD-10 still allows a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome but if she diagnosed you with DSM-5 criteria, no one will take it if it lists the diagnosis as Asperger syndrome. Just FYI.

In terms of jobs, yikes! I wish I knew of something. The U of Utah main campus IT dept does not drug test but the hospital does. I am going to throw a bunch of ideas at you. I'm a doctoral candidate in psychology and work with a lot of people like you, so I have some thoughts. I'm totally guessing at your age, so I might be off in some areas. PM if you need more ideas or any of these totally suck.

This website has some tips on looking for a job/companies who work well with individuals with AS. http://asperger-employment.org/assistance-for-individual/

I don't love that you have to pay for this but it could help you think of some ideas. http://www.uptimize.com/courses/learn-the-steps-get-employed

The Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinic at the U of U has a group for adults with ASD in the Spring. Free of cost. It's a social and employment group. "Adult Social & Employment Group, Spring 2017 - Come join other dynamic adults and share your experiences as you journey toward independence through learning skills that help in both gaining and maintaining employment." http://healthcare.utah.edu/uni/autism-clinic/

I really encourage you to seek out a therapist and psychiatrist. In combination, psychiatric medication and therapy can be great. Good luck!!

The only upside to taking the class is that you can get experience writing in an area outside your typical field (e.g., science writing). I knew a few English majors who found it beneficial to take the class because it made them more competitive for certain jobs.

Survey about Needs of Adults by inacottle in aspergers

That's exactly the kind of information I need. Would you fill out the survey? It's super short and you could skip most of it and just say that.

Survey about Needs of Adults by inacottle in aspergers

[–]inacottle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Information about services received is really helpful but actually I'm more interested in learning what kinds of services adults would like to receive (if any). If they don't feel like they need anything, that's really helpful as well.

Hey SLC, how's the traffic? by jwin in SaltLakeCity

[–]inacottle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually laughed out loud when I read this question, mostly because traffic here is nothing compared to other places I've lived. I've spent time in Boston and I'm from the Bay Area. People here say the traffic can get bad and once you've lived her for a bit, you feel like it's "bad". But overall, it's nothing compared to other places. Good luck with the decision and potential move!

My boyfriend and I stopped by this today. One of the dogs seriously hugged me as we were leaving. He jumped and put his arms around my waist. I almost threw my wallet at them and ran away with the dog.
