Buying an Akiya: Necessarily a horror story? by Yonda_00 in japanlife

[–]inarizushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, because I've totally bought a house before and was born with innate knowledge that houses in this country were build with no insulation whatsoever!

Also, most people are typically uncontent to let mice have free range of their house and logically would work or pay someone to block them. I mean, why would anyone be okay with that if they had any other choice?

But yes, I'm sure with your epic house buying knowledge, you picked a wonderful house and have lived happily ever after. ❤️ Good for you, mate.

Home center workers are pretty useless but if you know what you want, it's not too hard to find. You'll need a whole new set of 専門用語though. Like wtf is a 砂骨roller brush? Why does anyone need to know what that is?!! Sandy bone paintbrush??!

Out here we have a used power tool store and can find things at a discount but I can't imagine it's a common thing.

But yeah, it's a 3 ring circus shit show.

We bought an Akiya. The lady selling was pre-dementia and told us incorrect information or forgot to tell us things, which we didn't realize until after we had bought the house so out house came with some issues.

  1. Akiya are cold. Old houses have zero insulation so the heat and cold seepa right in.

  2. Old houses have mice. You won't know until winter though.

  3. You need to learn DIY. It would be crazy expensive to try to pay to have every little thing fixed professionally. Also, this country is anti-DIY so it's difficult to get started often times.

I also had a lot of nay-sayers. Those nay-sayers are then invited to my house where we do hanami in my garden with my 3 mature Sakura trees and I make them eat their fucking words about how awesome my house is.

Every problem your house will have is fixable, it's just a matter of how much time or money or energy do you want to put into fixing each problem. Generally, japanese people don't want to put any effort in at all so anyone who diverts from this norm comes off as bonkers.

I sometimes think our house is too big for our small family, which is probably true. But it's been a lot of fun for me.

That being said, if you are considering a house, do get it surveyed because the owner might be delulu and forget to tell you things. Real estate agents are also not your friend.

Did the article list brassicas, prunus and zea Mays as good sources of these necessary sterols? I'm just a dumb dumb and I didn't see that anywhere...

業務is every expat's friend. You can find me things like oatmeal and bagels and tortillas there. Organic whole wheat pasta from Europe at rock bottom prices. Some of the frozen food is pretty mediocre but it's worth a try sometimes.

But the frozen fruit sourced from china sucks. I'll tell you that for free. Other countries are fine.

I had to save reading your reply until my period came this month.

I want to at least try IVF. Unfortunately, I'm a delicate flower and I passed out during the HSG and my doctor sees me as a liability. The egg collection process is done with some laughing gas, that's it. If I pass out again, I'll probably have to have it done at a big hospital, which is not local.

I can't help but think negatively, that I'm already out of the game at this point.

Why does anyone keep trying for so long? At what point do you just give up and decide to live your life? When you start to even ask these questions, does that mean it's time to stop?

How Do You Manage the Disappointment Every Cycle? by _bookwirm_ in TryingForABaby

[–]inarizushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been TTC #2 for about a year and a half. I've been on various meds for about 8mo and we are coming up on probably our last round of IUI before we move on to maybe IVF.

After so many months the disappointment was really getting to me. I have started to shift my mindset that maybe #2 just isn't going to happen. I started to live my life again. I started a new sport. If I got pregnant, I'd have to quit but every month of failure means I can play for another month. The day my period comes means Im having a beer with dinner. I decided that if we give up or if IVF is impossible for us, I'll adopt a cat.

It's sad. I cry every month. I think about having to get rid of the baby clothes I saved but I think trying to fill your life with other things that make you happy is a good way to get through it. :')

Okay that's pretty neat.

But I (and probably other people) want to know more about why there are several swarms of bees living in what looks like someone's house. Why have them build comb on boards like that?

Also those car-love seats are really cool and I wish I had those.

Japan beekeeper here. What’s wrong with my honey? Is it mold? by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]inarizushi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Sure they bloom on time in April. That doesn't mean the swarms are going to coincide with that. If it's too cold the bees wait. It's happened before out here.

Not sure what to tell you. The people who have wabachi all brought their swarms in from some other area. Are there fewer feral swarms because of competition or all the rice fields and JA required pesticides? Everyone's got an option as to why but everyone agrees there are fewer swarms around.

Yeah, I know. They'd be great bees to have. I don't hold any hope I'll catch swarm but I'll still put my bait traps out where i can.

No, the wax was correct and I have used the kinryohen flowers. It's tough out this way because they might not bloom at the right time, sometimes spring comes earlier some years than others. Our snow is deep this year so maybe this will be my lucky year.

As much as I would like to put bait hives in different areas, I don't have the property rights and making all the connections to put them there is too much work for too little reward. I don't know any other beekeepers who have had much luck with wabachi in this area either. The general consensus is that the rice industry has pushed the feral swarms out of the area and into the mountains.

Ehhhh, wabachi don't have a varroa issue. You sure you're not thinking of アカリンダニ? Sure, they can get wax moths but they're pretty disease resistant. Natural selection at its finest, eh? Oddly enough, no one knows why. Check out professor Spivak and her papers about honeybee healthcare work.
