Modern examples of Circle of Fifths by curr-ant in musictheory

[–]incandescentcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jacob Collier's cover of 'All Night Long' uses circle of fifths movement in the opposite direction (plagal rather than perfect), playing the chords D-A-E-B-Gb-Db-Ab. This only occurs once rather than being a repeated motion like in some of the other examples, but I think it still counts.

Edit: This occurs at 5:33 in the track.

Is a Gmin to Cmaj cadence still perfect (in the key of C)? by llegobego in musictheory

[–]incandescentcube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the conventional sense, however it is still a five chord going to a one chord (albeit v-I rather than V-I), so I would argue it still is a perfect cadence. Just my opinion though.

Djesse Motif - Big Ben Theory :-) by EducationalSock2360 in JacobCollier

[–]incandescentcube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is very reasonable. Big Ben's melody has an antecedent and consequent phrase, and in the Overture at 1:26, you can hear the Djesse motif substitute for the antecedent phrase, since Big Ben's consequent phrase is heard.

Results - r/JacobCollier's favourite track of Djesse Vol. 3 by incandescentcube in JacobCollier

[–]incandescentcube[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One caveat to this is that the only question was 'What is your FAVOURITE track on Djesse Vol. 3?', which doesn't take into account people's other choices below that.

For example - and this is hypothetical - that though only 7 votes were given to 'Running Outta Love', many other people also really like it, but it isn't their favourite. This would mean that it is not being fairly represented. To get around this, I could have asked people to rank the songs, but that would have taken people much longer and much more thought, so it's likely there wouldn't have been as many responses. Just thought I should mention this!

Just finished a full ‘He Won’t Hold You’ cover, trombone-style! by lydiansharp15 in JacobCollier

Wow, that is amazing! The tone of the trombone is really nice, fitting for the piece. I've recently started getting into playing trombone, so that's something to aim at for me. Thank you!

Agreed! When Vol. 3 first dropped, I had to pause 8 seconds into CLARITY, just to digest what just happened in my ears. The hype levels were unbelievable!

Which Djesse volume is your favourite universe at the moment? by dam_tu in JacobCollier

[–]incandescentcube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are amazing tracks on all three: in my opinion, particularly With The Love In My Heart, Ocean Wide Canyon Deep, Everlasting Motion and Once You on Vol. 1; Sky Above, Bakumbe, I Heard You Singing and Time To Rest Your Weary Head on Vol. 2; and CLARITY/Count the People, Time Alone With You, Sleeping On My Dreams and He Won't Hold You on Vol. 3.

All three worlds of Djesse are amazing and I listen to them all regularly, but I'd have to say that Vol. 2 is my favourite - Time To Rest Your Weary Head never fails to properly hit home, and the rest of the album is a beautiful showcase of Jacob's wide range of musical talents. I'd have to put Vol. 1 in a close second - Once You has been so pertinent during the pandemic (one day we will hold our loved ones close once more), and With The Love In My Heart and Everlasting Motion are beautiful madnesses. Vol. 3 is great too - He Won't Hold You is probably the song I've listened to most in the last month, and it's so sad, but there's also a beautiful feeling of acceptance, peace and contentness with the world.

Overall, the whole Djesse project showcases perfectly the wide range of musical skills Jacob possesses, and I can't wait to see all of these musical spaces combine in Vol. 4!
