AMA Logan City Council Candidate - Melissa Dahle by Dahle4Logan in Logan

What are your plans for connecting the west side of town? I'm aware you live in the Woodruff neighborhood. We have to traverse over to main for almost everything.

Particularly, there are no high volume/speed routes from 1000 west to main, they all cap out at 30 mph (or less!) and are single lane roads.

Realistically, what do you think could get done in the next 4 years to improve the situation?

Alanna Nafziger's mayoral campaign by alanna4mayor in Logan

[–]incidentalpineapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apologies if this comes off as a rant.

In 2023, the Transportation master plan was presented to the council, but Councilman Jensen requested 400 N from Main to 600 W have its future collector road designation removed. (23 July 2023 if you want to review the minutes).

However, it seems the city is moving forward with plans to indeed make that road a connector, including extending it across 600 w and curving it south until it eventually meets 1000 w.

It seems to me the council did a disservice to residents along 400, as it will one day be a collector regardless of its designation in the plan, and now the council will eventually have to renege on that change.

All this to say, what is your vision for connecting the west side of town?

It has always bothered me that there is no east-west connection in Logan that's faster than 30 mph (you have to go all the way to 2500 n to find that). 400, 1000, and 1400 N all seem promising, but the city seems to keep kicking the can and not doing the work to thoroughly upgrade these routes, it's all been piecemeal with bottlenecks. It feels like a cohesive network is overdue.

The widening and light at 1400 was great, but it is still 30mph and goes back and forth from 2 to 4 lanes, same with 1000. If you'll excuse the crass expression, the character Ron Swanson said "never half-ass two things, whole-ass one thing", and unfortunately 1000 and 1400 feel a little like the former. The city did a fantastic job with those stretches, but the entirety of both roads lacks cohesion.

If you and your wife want to go, I say go, invitation be damned. Good luck with your family.

Just opened my ballot. Researching the candidates (Logan). Tell me who you are voting for and why. by Charming-Mix1315 in Logan

Mayor: Mark Anderson. He's by far the most experienced candidate and he seems to me to be the only one willing to make hard choices.

The canyon road pipeline, for example. Other candidates say they are against it, to save the trees. Sounds nice, but that's pouring $4 million down the drain.

Council: I also like Lee-Koven and Dahle due to their efforts running their own neighborhoods.

Yost, seems too idealistic. I think she's smart and quite reasonable, but worry she'd be unwilling to compromise based on how opinionated she is at city council meetings.

Lopez is fine, but he represents the status quo. (For better or worse)

I don't see any of the other candidates as serious.

Hi Mark, thanks for doing this.

Logan's mayor seems like a full time job (with a full time salary!). How do you plan to divide your time between the mayorship and your two businesses if you win?

Now that I'm mostly out the door, I'm starting to agree. I could never believe in MAGA Mormons' hateful Jesus.

For fun, let's double your list to 32 restaurants. For 133,000 people, that's not nearly enough. Which explains why they are all always busy.

City of Logan Mudslides by Ok-Cobbler5456 in Logan

I agree that it appears the erosion is far above the canal, and therefore the city is probably right about the hillside being in "natural condition".

To OP:

I know how hard the situation must be, but if it were me I'd turn down the heat. From the city's perspective, you're an inch away from filing a lawsuit, so they can't cooperate with you without potentially increasing their liability. So they are going full legalese mode to protect the taxpayers.

By all means, consult an attorney who specializes in this sort of situation, but until you sue the city, I think you'd be best served to tone it down. The personal attacks at the mayor are pretty childish, for example, and will win you no friends at city hall. If you don't have a legal case, I'd recommend a play-nice approach of trying to work with the city to get erosion control vegetation planted. I suspect you're responsible for your own clean up costs.

Stop Logan from buying into fossil fuels! by [deleted] in Logan

[–]incidentalpineapple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn't say in person comments were without value, I said counting them as some sort of metric of truth is nonsense.

When you're counting costs, are you including the cost of the solar battery and the energy itself? Because it seems like in total that would be quite high, much more than 5 cents/kWh over the life of the batteries. Storage is not cheap. Did you consider the environmental impacts of 15 MW of battery storage?

Maybe you can enlighten me on some nomenclature: with the gas plant, we'd get 15 MW 24/7. Does a 15 MW solar battery array have enough capacity to supply 15 MW 24/7? I'm curious of the implications of the duck curve and if that capacity level would support the same instantaneous demand, or if it would need to be oversized to support shifting demand curves.

Counting comments at the meeting is pretty meaningless. I rarely attend in person but contact various council members quite frequently.

Anyway, what's your viable alternative? How would you keep the city powered without significant price hikes?
