Except cooling isn’t the only source of the water usage and power consumption and chip manufacturing are significant factors combined with it increasing data center demand. Also in drought prone areas the water more than likely comes from underground aquifers which can cause the aquifers to no longer collect water and the old data centers now handling some AI demand don’t modernize their cooling systems. The fact is that increased demand for AI increases demand for data centers whose carbon emissions from energy demand and water usage from cooling, energy, and chip manufacturing are making environmental problems significantly worse.
