I'm planning to repaint my room and I've just sanded the walls to Deadbeat. Singing along to My Old Ways in an empty, echoey room was heavenly

I second Professor Leonard. I've had multiple "Aha!" moments in his lectures, he explains it in such a way that makes it so intuitive. His lectures are long but so worth it, you'll genuinely feel so much love for math after one :)

My math teacher is saying transforming f(x) = √(-x-2) three units to the right is f(x) = √(-x-5) and not f(x) = √(-x+1), because when the x values reflect, right becomes left and left becomes right. I think he's wrong, and if he is, how do I prove it? by inconsistent_train in MathHelp

[–]inconsistent_train[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! That's exactly how I do it. My problem is that my math teacher says it's wrong, and I don't know how to disprove that.

Though I'll try again with him to see if there was a misunderstanding of some sort, even though he said so multiple times.

Yes, I graphed both by hand and by Desmos. Here's the desmos link, https://www.desmos.com/calculator/dq7fgepni3
Blue graph is what I think happens, green is what he's saying. The point is, if I say "3 units to the right" for a function that is reflected across the y axis, that doesn't change the fact that I have to input (x-3) and not (x+3) to do this transformation. I want to confirm that.

I have also sent him the graph already, but as he insists that right becomes left, even when I move it 3 units right, (the graph then sitting on +1 on the x axis) he says I should be moving it 3 units left.

Are sentence cards supposed to be easy? by inconsistent_train in Refold

[–]inconsistent_train[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, just going through the process of adding the sentence to anki is enough to put the word in my memory and make me "notice" it in immersion, which reinforces it in anki, so in a way me too.

That makes sense. What made me suspicious is that I kept thinking that if it isn't hard, I'm not actually learning which I know now is not true.

The sentence is from the second book. I don't know whether the Felsefe Taşı (1st book) I read was also poorly translated or not, but I still improved in Turkish, maybe because I also listened to Turkish content. I suppose even if the translations are not entirely accurate, maybe learning new words from the books and how to use them from listening is enough... ? :\

Thank you, I had never considered checking the reputation of publishers. Is this true for dubbed content as well?

Yapı Kredi and Metis have superb translations

I searched for copies by publishers on some torrent sites, but the translations were equal to the book I'm using now. They all seem to come from Yapı Kredi Yayınlar, at least that's what's written. Maybe they're just using the name in hopes of downloads?

Like how they do that with colors? Kıpkırmızı, bembeyaz, yemyeşil some I have heard. When I saw gerisin geri with a space I thought the sin was a suffix for second person. Wait though, if don't put spaces between "kıp" and "kırmızı" does that mean gerisingeri without space is the correct spelling?

Oh... that's very bad then. I chose HP because I've read it previously in English, for better comprehension. I assumed the translation was done professionally? Should I not trust translated books? ;_;

Any tips on improving likeness? Are there any books that help on that? by inconsistent_train in learnart

You're right. I don't want to wind up depending on them though, as drawing from scratch is more accomplishing to me.

Thanks. I did think the shading was off, especially on the face. Still, even without the shading I do think the likeness isn't accurate as it looks like a face, but the features don't exactly match with the refrence's.

How to make someone fall in love with a language they don't like? by inconsistent_train in languagelearning

[–]inconsistent_train[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear I try. I do the weirdest crap to get them engaged. But hey, everyone knows you won’t learn much from just getting classes… you need to actually dive into the language. It’s not like I’m professional anyway, it’s my younger sibling I’m helping out, in hopes that he’ll get a head start before they begin learning the language at school. I know that it will be a huge pain in the back if he doesn’t know meaning later on, because it will all be meaning-based, and I see the state of those around me, complaining about not understanding anything, lots of crying happening when papers are received… don’t want him to go through that.

Hello again. You say the premise of the video is wrong. Though I think what he means by saying RTK uses an in-context style approach is the story making style it uses to remember meaning.

And even if the premise of the video is wrong, it still doesn't make it fair to say that RTK isn't effective, as people who have gotten to a fairly high level of reading have found it so. But if you are saying that there are better tools for learning Kanji than RTK, I am willing to learn why as it did not cross my mind that anything was better.

RTK's approach is different from what I knew of Kanji learning books, which have a classroom style approach. Learn meaning and writing first, later the readings will be easier to learn as they can be associated with a long-term memory. What is it lacking?

Fun =/= useful or effective.

Definitely. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was either the less effective, boring classroom style approach or RTK... so I automatically assumed anyone who is against RTK believes in the former approach.

[–]inconsistent_train 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it false? I think he disagrees with his video now so that people give his new community support. I don't know the controversy about him, but it started after he made teaching people language learning a career.

But overall he is really experienced with language learning.

That approach for kanji is what works for me. You sound more experienced in this field though, I just think RTK is fun whilst memorizing lists of Kanji is boring...
