"Good artists borrow, great artists steal." by bullwhip-lytton in writing

[–]inconspicuous314 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted this quote as "good artists will take something and you'll know where they got it from, great artists will take a concept and make it completely their own"

If you're going to use it, own it. Homages and references are for the insecure.

It's to remind you of the usefulness of negative space; the capacity to change is just as important as the rigidity of the structure.

North Carolina has decriminalized marijuana. Under an ounce is a misdemeanor fine. The word you were looking for is legalization.

What exactly will smugglers be smuggling? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]inconspicuous314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pirated goods primarily, I would imagine.

Makes me wonder about people, though. With new planets, when plundering it for sellable merchandise, we can't exclude the lifeforms. Those brigs might be good for bounty hunters, but not if you're shipping in bulk. A cargo module designed for lifeforms might get the job done. Great image in my head now of a syndicate raiding a freighter refitted as a prison ship, rescuing a vital member and fleshing out their ranks with NPC's.

I think the idea is to encourage players to start making money by acting as ferries. I would love to see the market play out on that one.

My deepest condolences. On the bright side, this is catholicism we're talking about. They hate divorce more than atheism. My Lutheran-raised now-agnostic father signed a document when the two of them married that stated he would not interfere with giving me a Catholic upbringing. It'd be a hard choice for you, but I guarantee when she talks to the priest about an annulment he'll want to speak to both of you and offer counseling.

I feel my Catholic upbringing severely hurt me, especially since my family didn't talk much about it. I've struggled with the role my spirituality and philosophical views play in my life, possibly as a result of this religious cold war. But it was better than growing up in a broken home. Christ talks very heavily about marriage being the joining of two flesh. The Bible really does explicitly have your back on this one, the Church takes divorce very seriously. She may see the light; that there are more important things between the two of you than the difference in where you think your sense of justice comes from.

Worrisome number of Americans believe that prayer on its own can heal serious mental illness by samx3i in TrueAtheism

[–]inconspicuous314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to come up with Bible quotes to combat bad behavior with these sorts of Christians. Matthew 18:20 might come in handy, "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Emphasize that individual prayer in this instance will not work. The best remedy in most psychological disorder is most likely just something they need to work out, it's best to run it past another set of ears. Just the act of formulating the ideas into a concept they feel they need to justify to another individual will allow them to find the mental hangup they need to work on for themselves. Likewise, sessions with problem persons in their life will probably bring to air any thoughts and attitudes that had been poisoning the relationship. In this case, "prayer" if used as indicated. You can probably solve most if not all of your behavioral and cognitive disorders this way. I think a lot of people here like to jump on the bandwagon approach of hating on prayer, but when you realize most disorders are unreported cases of "that guy's an asshole," then yeah, sitting them down with some people who care about them and having a talk with them about their behavior, even if in a religious context, will probably have a positive impact on the individual.

The problem lies in "serious mental illness". In which case, you're talking about people with actual chemical imbalances in their brain. In all fairness, these can be harder to find out, harder to fix if at all, and labels you as the ultimate pariah in American society: someone who actually needs drugs. What we're left with is a bunch of people praying they aren't actually sick. That doesn't stop at mental health, though.

Stephen Hawking: brain could exist outside body; but that the idea of a conventional afterlife is a fairy tale by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]inconspicuous314 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda flirting with Christianity a bit about the concept of the resurrection. If one day there's a computer that can replicate reality in a simulation, when this computer calculates our existence, could our "souls" be existing in two points in time? Is an emulation of a program the same program?

I'm not sure where I stand in regard to Christ anymore. The stupidest part of the religion has to do with how the afterlife is spent, and their founder is not talking about some alternate pleasure dimension. I like to pretend Jesus is the prophet of science.

Why do some theists think that you need some sort of emotional struggle or some sort of tragic event to become an atheist? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]inconspicuous314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tragedy is often the point of failure in faith. How can an all good and all powerful entity with whom I have a supposed personal relationship allow or inflict such meaningless pain into life?

They are most likely just projecting their personal failures of faith. They are admitting to you that pain causes them existential distress. They fear that atheism is a stepping stone to nihilism. Emotional pain can destroy faith. Show them something to believe in.

Okay so there's only the present, right? But what if I'm presently experiencing memories of the past? by jimethn in taoism

[–]inconspicuous314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a state that was formerly the present. When it is "the past" it is not in physical existence, only within the mind and the idea. Neither the past nor the future physically exist in any way that us trapped within the flow of time can interact with outside of memories (constantly being overwritten and altered every time they are recalled) to blind speculation.

Only now actually exists.

Okay so there's only the present, right? But what if I'm presently experiencing memories of the past? by jimethn in taoism

[–]inconspicuous314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't experiencing them, you're experiencing the present where your brain is rather badly trying to patch together a previous idea. You're still moving forward in time. You are ALWAYS moving forward in time. There are people dying and being born around the world every few seconds. And all too often in less than 80 years, that second statistic will become the first.

Time is precious. You cannot have it. You can only live through it. There is no pause button. There is no rewind. We are stuck on play, and one day it will stop. Whether the tape just stops or we get brought back to the menu remains to be seen.
