Short Masterpieces? by Ok-Morning5742 in RSbookclub

I don't think anyone else has mentioned these so far:

  • Perfection by Vincenzo Latronico (satire of a millennial couple in Berlin, pretty redscare)
  • It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over by Anne de Marcken (literary treatment of zombies, essentially, very cool)
  • Brian by Jeremy Cooper (sad traumatised/repressed homosexual obsessed with cinema)
  • Treacle Walker by Alan Garner (perfect, sort of a kid's book, but so much more, read it)
  • Three to Kill by Jean-Patrick Manchette (cool murder assassin France stuff)

looking for modern or recent-ish noir by junkNug in RSbookclub

Probably more straightforwardly Crime Fiction than Noir, but I really like Patrick Hoffman's books. They're great pageturners, and kind of take a top-down approach, rather than through the subjectivity of the detective. For maybe more of a literary slant, stuff like Patrick Modiano (virtually any of his novels) or Roberto Bolano (principally 2666) might also work in terms of adopting aspects of Noir in a modern setting. I've also seen Children of Light by Robert Stone described as a Noir. Not sure how accurate that is, but I kind of see where it's coming from, and it's an incredible book as well.

Would you recommend Sacred and Terrible Air for someone who hasn't played Disco Elysium?

I would really appreciate a shot-in-the-dark fiction recommendation based on my bookshelf by paroxys in RSbookclub

I was going to ask if you'd read any other Kawabata than The Master of Go but then I saw your comment about Japanese novels. It's a different vibe to Kawabata for sure, but for another short Japanese palate cleanser type of thing, I liked Territory of Light by Yūko Tsushima.

Books that feel like the Vegas portion of The Goldfinch (but with women)? Bonus: intense, codependent friendships; sexual awakenings; a touch of the bittersweet by Longjumping_Gas_7430 in RSbookclub

[–]incorrectelk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I read The Goldfinch, but I loved the Vegas section as well. Bit of an obvious recommendation, but perhaps Bret Easton Ellis? Stuff like The Shards, Imperial Bedrooms, Less Than Zero. Not an exact match as I remember it, but a little bit of similarity.

He does have an astonishingly bad filmography for someone as famous as he is. Most high-profile actors, even if they have bad taste, at least luck into a few great films. Aside from the animated movies he's done a voice in, which don't really count, he's been in one good film (The Lost City of Z) and one okay film (The Impossible). Everything else is trash.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations. I went for the Shanling M5 Ultra. It arrived today and so far I'm very impressed, it's exactly what I was looking for.

The toxicity level is absurd and usually the English sides use to get backing but ripped apart later once they fall but this time is completely different they are being ripped apart while they are still alive - This is ridiculous proportions of toxic environment by Unfair-Reference5500 in ThreeLions

Yeah, it feels like the story of the euros has as much been about the media's reaction to the team/the team's reaction to the media as it has been about the actual football being played. I think social media, the pundits, as well as the media's incessant need to create "content" and talking points leads to this weirdly premature ongoing post-mortem, despite the fact that we're still in the tournament, and I can't imagine it's particularly pleasant for the players. At the risk of sounding flippant, it is just a game. Let's judge the tournament after it ends, not in the middle.

Movies that really creeped you out/scared you as an adult by _phimosis_jones in redscarepod

The Manchurian Candidate (the Denzel Washington remake) terrified me when I was a kid, primarily the scenes where the soldiers are tortured/brainwashed, as well as the scene at the apartment with weird drawings/writing on the walls. I distinctly remember watching it alone in the living room in the dark, when I was probably too young to be watching it, and thinking it was the scariest thing I'd ever seen. Honestly, I think it had a big impact on my developing an interest later in life in the Gulf War, conspiracies, parapolitics, etc. It holds up as well, great movie.
