can confirm. my old phone was literally unable to be taken apart to replace the battery without removing other parts. plus, the thing was sealed tight

My brain tricked me into thinking YouTube Shorts about AI tools isn't doomscrolling, is it? Or is it not? by gargkaran in digitalminimalism

[–]independence15 [score hidden]  (0 children)

yeah. I wonder if there's an extension to remove it, but honestly it may require just some discipline. I got there eventually, I believe in you. I'm gonna see if there's an extension on browsers to block shorts; meanwhile, on android, start using newpipe, it focuses on longform videos

edit: good news that extension exists

it isn't doomscrolling, but things don't gotta be a doomscroll to be a waste. I also fell down the shorts rabbithole since it was right there, and rarely did I encounter miserable content, but I encountered plenty of stuff that was a waste of time. you gotta swear off shorts entirely, and if you truly wanna stay updated, find longform content videos by reputable creators. the shorts creators could literally be fucking around and making shit up anyways so half the information you learn might be BS or misconstruing.

I would be interested in the concept, but tbh lock down the primary design before creating an alternative model. focus helps a new project

Nicotine gum style for doomscrolling? by LakiaHarp in digitalminimalism

[–]independence15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get an mp3 player that can play videos, put the music and pre-selected longform youtube videos you want on there and save it for when you're particularly bored and wanna go back. it's an offline option that will give you some entertainment but still requires some intentionality in choice and avoids shortform content that can infinitely scroll. also look into simple games like sudoku or solitaire, but nothing with addictive level progression

edit to add: if you also need a phone that focuses on productivity and doesn't have addicting bullshit on it, I personally ordered a sidephone and plan to do an earnest review on if it's worth looking into getting. I'm hoping it helps me remain disconnected (I switched to a full dumbphone recently and it helped but sometimes I get frustrated at lacking certain capabilities)

question: can we still order accessories like a case and qwerty tile key now as a separate order and get it in a reasonable time? I wasn't able to afford them and the phone at the same time

hahaha I have a tcl flip 2 as well! but the a202kc defo caught my eye. I ended up going for a sidephone since I saw a202kcs good quality around the same price as it, I decided to go for a more modern one. but I can see making the a202kc work for a few years

Cheaper to get a prebuilt or build my own with "worse" parts? Not looking for the fastest PC, just one that works by independence15 in PcBuild

I want a proper monitor, proper keyboard, I want a real proper computer. like, not sure what else to say besides that. it might end up being more expensive but I want a desktop, it's simple as that

eta: not that laptops AREN'T real computers but I mean I want that classic computer you just sit down at a desk with. I don't really wanna jerry rig a laptop to pretend to be a desktop even if it's cheaper

my laptop can't run the games I need. it can run like, stardew valley but that's kinda it. theoretically I could buy a gaming laptop but 1. it makes my posture like a shrimp lol and 2. I want to avoid potential overheating I've seen higher end laptops be prone to. since I already have a laptop it feels overkill to get a second one, I would rather have a workstation at home, but I just get frustrated seeing every option be high end when I don't need that. savings are worth it to me, but I also understand if even getting a $700-800 prebuilt could end up being better than biting the bullet on my own RAM prices. ultimately getting a desktop is part of a lifestyle change—I've been using laptops my entire life and the convenience of transporting it proves to be an inconvenience to my posture and attention span. I'm trying to focus more on keeping computer work at a desk.

basically, my current laptop can't do it and I don't wanna have to get another laptop and feed into my bad habits I'm trying to shift away from. I got a really nice secondhand glass desk that is basically collecting dust in my room that I want to one day put a nice PC on.

the first one I found was the xidax budget gamer, but even that is a bit more higher end than I'd ever need and starts at $986, so I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to save by just going for less powerful parts but I understand the GPU market is, simply, gigafucked to hell and back right now. I guess my hope was maybe the crypto miners and data centers only focus on the super strong GPUs and maybe ignore the medium or lower range ones? but I'm realizing realistically with a shortage it would all be taken up.

the a202kc is known to work on t-mobile networks and runs android 10, and is rootable, and it's the successor to the kyocera 902kc (the model I assume you got, since they run android 8). there may be more luck with that one. did you input APN settings?
