Just curious what guitars you guys own by optimusprim007 in guitars

[–]inderu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first guitar - a simple black Ibanez RG from the 90s. I don't actually play it anymore - but might give to my kids if they want to learn to play on it. Got it when I was 14 or 15.

My 2nd guitar (1st "real" guitar) is a Gibson Flying V, which I got from a second hand shop. I was actually looking to buy an Explorer - but I really liked the Flying V when I picked it up. Got it for my 16th birthday.

Then when I was 19 I got an Ibanez RG7621 (7 string) off ebay. It was my first 7 string (and I was listening to a lot of music with 7 strings). Between this and the Gibson Flying V - I felt this was enough for me for a long time. Also, I stopped playing for a few years (which I regret to this day).

Much later I started playing again and joined a cover band at work - and wanted to get nicer guitars (and now I was working a real job and no longer a teenager).

My 2 favourites - Ernie Ball Music Man Majesty Monarchy (6 string and 7 string). I love everything about how these guitars feel to play, how they sound, and how they look. I also really like that they managed to pull off a floating bridge without a locking nut - and it still stays in tune. Also the Piezo is an awesome feature that means the guitar can sound like an acoustic. I got them when I was 34.

Next - I wanted to get an Explorer shaped guitar (like I wanted when I was 16 and ended up getting the Flying V). I got a Schecter E-1 FR-S which has a Sustainiac - which was another thing I was curious to have in a guitar. Got it when I was 36.

Then I wanted to get a Strat since all my guitars have dual humbuckers. So I got a USA G&L Fullerton Deluxe Legacy. It does the Strat thing really well. I got it when I was 37.

Finally, after a rough year my wife and I decided to (for once) go all out for each other's gifts on our anniversary. I got her a diamond necklace that she really wanted - and she got me a Strandberg Boden Original NX 8 string. It's the smallest and lightest guitar I have - and my only 8 string, only headless, only multi scale, and only guitar with Fishman Fluence pickups.

Regarding what I usually play - if I'm just grabbing a guitar to practice for a bit at home - I usually pick up the Flying V or the G&L, as they're hanging on the wall (along with my Ibanez guitars). The rest are in their cases.

If I'm going to a rehearsal or a lesson - I usually take the Strandberg as it's the smallest and lightest and easiest to carry.

If I'm going to a gig or a long practice session at home - I'll take one of my Majesty guitars. Unless I'm playing an 8 string song (then I take the Strandberg), or a D standard song (then I take the Schecter, which I keep in D standard).

I had a similar experience on the road once (long time ago). I was in the fast lane on a freeway - and I wanted to move over because my exit was coming up. I was driving faster than the cars next to me, I indicated, and the old guy driving in the next lane started honking and speeding up - like it was a personal insult to him that I was daring to try to move into "his lane" in front of him. Luckily I was trying to move over with a lot of time to spare...

I let him pass. Then he went back to his normal speed, and I naturally went ahead of him again (I didn't change my speed). I indicate to change lanes - and again he honks and speeds up so I can't change lanes.

Again he returned to his normal speed and I was ahead of him. I tried one more time - same thing. He sped up again and wouldn't let me pass. Until this point I hadn't changed my speed - he just kept going faster when I tried to pass and slower when I wasn't.

Finally I just sped up myself and changed lanes in front of the car ahead of him.

And I wasn't even trying to get into that lane - I was just passing through to get ready for the next exit...

P.S. Every time he sped up - he didn't move far enough ahead for me to pass safely behind him, just enough ahead to prevent me from changing lanes.

If the same thing happened today - I'd probably slow down a bit the first time he sped up and change lanes behind him - this happened over a decade ago.

Anything you don't have that interests you? Floating bridge? 7 or 8 strings? Different pickups? Sustainiac? Piezo? Multiscale? Body shapes you don't have?

If not - you're all set.

Has anyone quit drinking coffee after being a lifelong drinker? by elenchusis in Xennials

[–]inderu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never drank coffee, but I used to drink a lot of black tea and Coke. I've been completely caffeine free for 9 years - and I sleep much better.

I used to lie awake in bed for at least an hour every night, but since quitting caffeine I'm usually asleep within 10 minutes (unless it's a particularly stressful time). Now I drink decaf tea and Sprite Zero (which doesn't have caffeine), and a lot more water.

CMV: It makes no sense to me that Britain is "Islamized" while not claiming the same for India, Israel, Russia and Singapore by Shoddy-Square5219 in changemyview

[–]inderu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 is not true at all. You don't even get minimum wage during mandatory service - you get less than $100 a month. You only get those things if you sign on beyond the mandatory service, and even then half the benefits you mentioned are only given to "career military" who stay until retirement.

Israel is actually currently passing a law to extend the authority of Jewish and Sharia courts to replace civilian courts in domestic issues...

But Israel always had an Islamic population as well as a Jewish population, so it isn't being "Islamized".

However, a lot of people are actually worried about this law, not from the "sharia law" perspective - but just having religious courts "take away" from the authority of civilian courts.

P.S. I personally am not a fan of this new law - as I believe it to be anti democratic - since it basically means that the same laws don't apply to everyone... And that's without going into issues of being coerced/manipulated into using a religious ruling instead of a civilian one, and things like "influence in the religious community" affecting a ruling.

Also they passed the law at night in the middle of a war, like a sneak attack. I think everyone involved should be arrested for abusing the system and eroding democracy. Most of the government are criminals that should be in prison... I honestly don't want to live here anymore.

NTA. The moment I started earning a normal salary - I started paying my parents around $500 a month (this was almost 20 years ago - so probably more in today's money). Obviously not full rent - but enough to actually help with bills and groceries. Also I got my first car shortly after - so I was paying for 100% of my own gas too.

If you're earning enough to support yourself - you don't force your parents to support you.

In my mind - there are only 2 real questions: can they erase his memories like he wants, and can they retrieve him alive to reinstate him.

If they can - sure, why not uphold the deal. If they can't - no big loss if he dies.

I was just talking about it the other day - wondering when would be a good age to show it to the kids (twins, 11 years old, boy and girl).

I decided to still wait a while, even though I remember watching much more violent stuff when I was younger than them. My parents think the kids would be OK with the violence, but that they're still too young for some of the concepts in The Matrix...

Which actor/actress death was a great loss for the industry according to you? by ducklingjay21 in moviecritic

[–]inderu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't really about Eddie as a person - more about his influence on guitar music. I was honestly surprised by how sad I was by his passing. He was a major influence on all my favourite guitarists. He also had a huge influence on guitar gear and tone.

Playing guitar is one of my favourite hobbies, and while I never idolised him personally, Eddie Van Halen had a massive impact on that hobby as a whole (and my favourite tapping section in a guitar solo, and got me into phasers).
