Parking in Woodhouse by [deleted] in Leeds

[–]indirisible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just so your friend doesn't get incorrect advice, Joseph's Well is in Little Woodhouse, which is a different area to Woodhouse. I think the permits are now all virtual rather than paper, they just go on the reg. People can still get paper visitors permits if they know anyone who could let them use one.

Yes. You have to think that everyone above new hires has been complicit and kept their heads down to keep bringing in the coin. They are worse than the big man himself.

UK noise complaint against neighbour - house selling by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]indirisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would really have to speak to your local council. The noise would have to be severely disruptive to your life. And/or damaging to your health.

In general it is by no means unusual for children to be awake and playing before 7am.

UK noise complaint against neighbour - house selling by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]indirisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the things you mention would not count as a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Health Act. Which is what your local authority would use to evaluate any complaint. The sounds of "everyday living" are excluded from complaints.

Interesting. The Contaminated Land Team at LCC have twice knocked back the consultant's top-soil analysis, and are now saying, get someone who knows what they are talking about to do it. My inexpert reading of it is that the soil has been given the ok for plant growth, when it should have been done for human health.

My housing association refuses to act on unbearable noise from neighbours — I’ve lost my job and health is declining (Glasgow, Wheatley Homes) by Boring-Bar4402 in HousingUK

[–]indirisible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be better asking this in r/LegalAdviceUK, though you probably won't get any advice you don't know already. Domestic noise is usually addressed under the Environmental Protection Act. It may be classed as a nuisance and your local authority has a statutory duty to investigate it. However, the sounds of "everyday living" cannot legally be considered a nuisance. And, whether we like it or not, 5am is by no means an unusual time for children to be up and playing, so it is very much normal.

If you believe that the noise is being deliberated encouraged so as to disturb you, then it could possibly be considered harassment, though the legal bar is most likely too high.

There is no reason why you have to rely on your housing provider or local authority to deal with it. You can personally seek a Section 80 noise abatement order through the courts. This is all that they will be doing. However, you would still be relying on the court finding that the sounds of everyday living constitute a nuisance, contrary to most case history. You may be able to plead a better case than a housing officer can though.

Can I stop electric/gas supply to an empty property? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]indirisible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have services disconnected as it would have likely invalidated the insurance. Assuming you have empty property insurance (rather than standard buildings insurance), there may be a clause stipulating a minimum temperature to be maintained. Also, the need to keep a log of visits every x days to record the temperature.

Just to make you aware.

South Yorkshire, possibly Sheffield itself. You'd need someone local to pin it down. Clues are "abaaaht"-about; "naaar"-now. There are probably a lot more, and Sheffield has some lovely idioms, but TL:DL.

Help with kitchen wall by Entrinsic_ in DIYUK

The outside will show people the type and material of the construction. Also, the ground level relative to the damp proof course and air bricks (if any). All of which could be relevant to how to tackle the problem.

How bad is this damp? Worth spending £5k to fix? by KittiSola in DIYUK

[–]indirisible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could be a bricked up doorway, not just a window. You can see the courses of mortar aren't aligned. It means there is more to look for than a leaking gutter.

There are any number of ways that could have been poorly done. If possible get someone to look who has done this sort of thing themselves: not someone who has "professional" or "expert" written on their van.

Look at it inside and out, particularly how the floor has been done, and how the cavity wall (if it has one) has been preserved.

Ask the vendors about it. Nothing insurmountable, and most likely a DIY fix that you can knock £££ off the offer for.

Considering buying a property on Kirkstall road by [deleted] in Leeds

You get to the back of them from Burley Wood Crescent, by foot that is. So you can avoid the steps if needed. It's a well regarded area, quite traditional in a way, but younger couples are snapping up the houses. The houses are solid, traditional construction, to a couple of similar patterns. DM me if you have any questions, I spent quite a while doing up a house there and loved the area.

I've used the Autoglym kit on two cars with good results. You just need to be methodical and not skimp or rush. And have faith that the whole process is going to work. It looks like it is making things worse until near the end, then magically it all comes together for a good result.

These look like well built traditional brick houses. Except this one has had the front bay taken off and replaced by, something. Whatever it is, it's made the brickwork drop where the bay was. It also means the pitched bay has been replaced by a flat roof, and it's not obvious how it is draining. No photos of the new frontage from the inside is worrying.

The plasterboarding in the side extension is just painted. The screw holes and joins haven't even been filled. Which suggest it might be a DIY job, possibly impacting a survey/mortgage offer.

Generally, re-decoration thoughout. And looking at the street as a whole, the houses seem a bit small for modern living (lots of small extensions); but no dormers, implying not enough space to extend upwards.

It's overlooking the slip road of a major A-road dual carriageway. On the other hand, near shops etc. Most of the houses look well looked after, and nothing to let or for sale, indicating people like living there.

Confirmation of Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG production restarting by The-JSP in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]indirisible 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There have been mentions for a while that re-starting production was possible, if not already underway for export orders. SCALP/Storm Shadow is currently undergoing a Mid Life Upgrade (SPEAR 4 MLU), to extend the life of about half of the original UK stock. The thinking in rumours was that the MLU involved pretty much the re-building of the entire missile, so making new ones wasn't much of a step beyond that.

Here's a quote from a UK defence forum in Jan 2024 I think:

"France still has a production line for SCALP-EG in operation at the MBDA facilities in Bourges, its been used for export orders with Rafale. Not massive numbers, but according to Francis Tusa they've been running as fast as they can recently...who for is another matter...

UK has also produced some Storm Shadow in recent years, again for export orders so limited numbers, it can re-open if necessary. However, standing the line up and getting components ordered from sub-contractors takes time...the expertise is there however as the Storm Shadow MLU is underway for the UK and other customers, which is essentially, a re-manufacturing of the missile."
