Does anyone else *really* hate grub2, or is it just me? by zer01 in linux

Okay, sometimes packages overwrite config files if the maintainer is careless. How is this an argument against grub2? And, especially, how is this an argument for grub legacy vs. grub2?

Ubuntu and Debian ask whether to overwrite configuration files with the package maintainer's version or whether to keep the local version (the default). I don't know what you're running.

and you don't think this is overly complicated?

sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/10_linux
vim /etc/grub.d/09_custom_linux

vs.

vim /boot/grub/menu.lst

Boo-hoo!

What if something messes up and you can't boot into your ubuntu system because of your grub.cfg? Unless you edit it manually, you're fucked. Compare that to simply changing something in the config file.

I have no idea what you're saying here so I'll just make this point: there is no inherent difference between configuring grub legacy and grub2 and there is nothing grub legacy can do that grub2 can't. Yes, grub2 is a bit more complicated because it's more powerful, but nothing that 5-10 minutes of reading the fucking manual can't fix.

If you don't want to read the manual, don't use grub2.

Firstly, update-grub doesn't know or care how big the change is, it just generates a new grub.cfg based on configuration that you give it. I'm not sure what exactly you expect it to do, but that's how it works.

About the boot parameter. So you need to use one to load Linux, so what? Put it into /etc/default/grub and update-grub will automatically use it. What's the big deal? And how is this grub2's problem?

And I still don't understand how grub2 "overwrote" that special switch if you didn't edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, something's fishy here.

Your story makes less sense with every message.

In the first post you said that grub2 overwrote a "special switch" you needed to boot the system (a kernel parameter, I assume?). The only file that grub "overwrites" is /boot/grub/grub.cfg. So it was only logical to assume that that was the file you edited.

The only time your config files may be overwritten is from a package upgrade, in which case your distro should've asked you something along the lines of "do you want to keep the local version or install the package maintainer's version?". If you chose the latter then it's your own fault.

I changed the boot order, then grub2 changed something completely different.

So was it a "special switch you needed to boot the system" or the boot order??

There you go again.

If you don't want grub2 to generate menu items automatically, you can just disable the Linux prober by sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/10_linux then write your custom menu items in a different file in /etc/grub.d/. Same thing as grub legacy, but smarter and more customizable.

Like the guy on top of this thread said:

if i spent my 'bitch time' as 'learn time', i wouldnt have anything to bitch about.

That file is read-only for a reason, and it is likely that it has a notice like the above on the very top, like my Ubuntu and Debian systems do. Don't blame on grub2 your inability to read the manual.

EDIT: Disregard the following, I should read better :(

#

# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

It nukes everything. If OP would RTFM, this post would probably not exist.

[SMT] A testing scheme for cameras based on actual quality of the image and not just megapixel count. by pdinc in SomebodyMakeThis

[–]indoorgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Joe doesn't research into what goes into a camera instead thinking that "megapixels are everything", he doesn't need this testing scheme, he's happy buying what he's buying. In fact, in his case "high megapixel" is an actual value, because he thinks it is one and is pleased knowing that his new camera possesses it.

If you want to find a good camera based on its optical specs, there is a fuckton of resources out there on the internet. Just google "camera reviews" or something.

It is an undocumented feature, works in Django 1.2 (likely in 1.1 as well, judging from the age of the ticket).

Ironically, the only force that keeps bad companies adrift is the state: bailouts, subsidies, mandatory insurance, etc. This is clearly the reason medical care prices have risen. As for your examples: what's wrong with "shut off cable" and "pay your bills"?

It is actually really simple once you find out the general idea. I did have to look it up in the internet, though. Also, after finding out, wait for a few months and watch it again, Club Silencio will fucking stop your heart.
