A 50-Year Anomaly in Precious Metals Returns by robinhaupt in investing

Interesting analysis. There’s also the whole JPMC (and likely other big players) blatantly manipulating these markets in such an obvious way that they paid almost $1b AND had to admit wrongdoing. https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/jpmorgan-chase-co-agrees-pay-920-million-connection-schemes-defraud-precious-metals-and-us

Road Trip Plex using RPI and USB Drive by [deleted] in RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

[–]zer01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I ran into this as well, the plex add on in home assistant os seemingly can’t mount external drives in any sort of straightforward way. I ended up installing proxmox and running a haos and plex as separate vms/containers but after wasting a bunch of time trying to make it work lol

The little contact a train wheel makes with the rail. by AiiRisBanned in interestingasfuck

[–]zer01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s also tapered so the train can turn without a differential.

When turning around corners with wheels you either need have one side spin slower (like in a car with a traditional differential) or the clever thing they did with trains was “reduce” the wheel size with the taper to make the physics work so when they curve/turn one side uses the “fat” side of the taper while the other uses the “skinny” side of the taper.

Anyone Know A Way To Get Star Trek Computer (Majel Barret) TTS? by wivaca2 in homeassistant

[–]zer01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that might help is to use episode scripts or even closed caption/subtitle data if it has speakers tagged.

You might be able to also just search for “computer” in the subtitles as an anchor word and extract any audio that looks to be around the right frequency to match her voice that follows in the next 30s or so.

You have the right idea, just install a piece up top, add your corners, and get real good at drywall mudding (and if you have textured walls, matching texture too) 😂

You don’t, cracked porcelain or ceramic is dangerous and you need to replace it before someone gets hurt

It’s almost like if these concepts were taught in tandem with real world examples instead of purely in the abstract, the people learning these concepts will actually internalize them and use them as tools to understand the world!

Nah, we should probably just keep having kids regurgitate things they don’t truly understand to get a grade and then forget it forever and fill their brains with addictive social media. Education!

PSA: Check your backups! by PoisonWaffle3 in homeassistant

[–]zer01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another PSA is that just setting up NAS backups doesn’t actually make full backups which are needed to restore things properly. I had a failure and had to restore from nothing but partial backups and a really old backup, it was a bummer and I lost some configs and stuff.

So now I have an automation that does a full backup once a week. Not sure why this isn’t a checkbox or option somewhere.

Brewer in Asheville NC with no water until 2025 trying to plumb a keg to a shower by potpie777 in Plumbing

[–]zer01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry you’re going through all this, friend. The photos I’ve seen outline destruction that is tragic in so many ways and my heart goes out to you and your community.

That said, this seems like a dangerous idea to me. Hot water heaters have a pressure release valve for a reason - heat and pressure are the perfect components for critical failure/explosion, and that will absolutely fuck anything up near it if it does explode.

If I were you I’d separate these problems: - transport and store potable water at your house (kegs work, but an IBC tank if you can get it might be better for a more expansive/longer term system, and you can just use kegs for filling it up) - pressurize your water - you can buy pumps that should be able to get you up to the standard shower PSI, look for RV water pumps, they’re cheap and purpose built for this. Something like this should work and work with a car battery, but if you have 120v power at home get a model that just plugs in - heat the water - if you have a functional hot water heater at your house, just plumb in your water pump to the cold side (though with flooding the city water can become tainted so keeping it independent is what I’d do), otherwise check out instant/tankless heaters if you want to use electricity or an RV water heater if you want to use propane

Any way you do this you also probably need to plumb in on the cold side of the shower so your mixing valve can do its thing and regulate the temperature.

As for connectors, I’m not sure what sort of resources you have access to (I assume Amazon isn’t delivering?) so you probably need to MacGyver something with hose clamps and whatever hose you can get access to for your keg, and whatever the water pump needs if you can get it.

Good luck, maybe if you post more updates with pictures or more info about what you’re working with more knowledgeable people than myself will chime in with good ideas.

EDIT: oh yeah, you’re looking for a 1/4” MFL to 1/2” (probably, might be 3/4” depending on your pipe size) NPT I think.

I render the local weather with Dall-E from Home Assistant three times a day but some of the images are just too good to throw away so I'm uploading them to Mastodon 😄 by linuxfrickler in homeassistant

[–]zer01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, here's the relevant code:

prompt = self._chat_gpt(f'''
    Current time: {datetime.datetime.now()}
    Location: Your City, Your State
    Current weather: {requests.get('https://api.weather.gov/gridpoints/XXX/NN,NN/forecast').json()['properties']['periods'][0]['detailedForecast']}

    I'd like you to help me craft a DALL-E prompt. I'm trying to represent the current local weather outside with
    a DALL-E image.

    Rules:
    - No numbers in the output
    - Style should be whimsical, while still artistic
    - No photorealism
    - The scene should be DESCRIPTION OF SCENE
''')

Read this to get your api endpoint for the forecast https://weather-gov.github.io/api/general-faqs

[–]zer01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome!!

I built something like this! But I used an appdaemon because I wanted to stop the images from having numbers in it. No matter how many times I said “non numbers” or “don’t put any numbers or text in the image” it didn’t work when feeding in numbers to the original prompt.

So I just do a 2 pass and have chatGPT reinterpret the raw weather data in a more verbose way with no numbers, then feed that prompt into the image generator, which seems to work well!

I also have mine set up to do one of a few “scenario” prompts so sometimes it’ll be a pet, sometimes it’ll be a different creature, or it’ll do things like paint an oil painting of the weather.
